Chronicles of Luna Regia

Faery Lullaby
by Truly Carmichael (HL Eleanor Fairchild)

The wind in the valley is bitter and cold.
Sing Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
The wolves prowl the hilltops or so I've been told.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
The fair folk watch over good children at night,
And keep them from harm, so they say...
...But stories and legends are not always right...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...

When I was a girl I went walking alone.
Sing Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
I sat down to rest 'neath the tall standing stone.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
I drifted and dreamed 'neath the full autumn moon
Of silvery laughter so gay.
I'll always remember that dark, haunting tune.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...

I saw figures spinning in garments of green,
Sing Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
I moved to the shadows so I'd not be seen.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
They whirled and they danced round a figure so small
Like ravens that circle their prey.
They kept the child silent and still in their thrall.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...

And then in an instant the dancing had ceased.
Sing Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
The revelry's end was the start of the feast.
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Perhaps I remembered, perhaps I but dreamed,
The changeling was carried away.
But burned in my mind is that horrible scream...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...

The fair folk in autumn are hungry and wild.
Sing Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
So keep to thy cradle and sleep well my child....
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...
Hushabye Lullaby Ley...

Harken now to the days of yore, wherein these pages are chronicled all that has come before. The Court of the Moon has long been a part of the cycle of seasons, though they were not always known as such. Before the rift that gave birth to the Autumn People and the Children of Spring there were only the Tuatha de Danaan. Read now their histories and legends, told by their storykeepers, and walk amid the portraits of the past and present.

Submission Rules

Do you have a desire to add to the chronicles? If so, you may submit stories or art to Sajhiri via PM. Please note the following guidelines:

  • Character Names: Fey names are typically reflective of their totem. The recent fey are the Latin name of their totem itself, but earlier fey were named for Latin terms for aspects of their totem rather than directly named for the totem itself. (i.e. a Cat totem Fey might be named the Latin word for Claw or Hiss rather than the Latin word for Cat). This is to preserve direct totem names for new Fey.
  • Details: Be sure you have an understanding of the period you're writing in, and how the fey of that period behaved. Also be sure you understand the magic system if magic plays a part of your story.
  • T one and Style: Remember that these are stories as written by Tribal Storytellers. They will be shamanic and parable-like in nature rather than ornate novellas.
  • Art Content: Portraiture is welcome, as are scene depictions from the stories. Please only do art of already posted scenes, Fey mentioned in the posted stories, or the current crop of Fey being RPed.
  • Art Size/Format: Please keep all artwork in JPG format if possible. A thumbnail will be made for each piece to be placed in this thread and linked to the place I will upload the full version, so size constraints are not too much of an issue. Please try to keep the images under 500K in filesize though.

The Tuatha de Danaan

(Please note, this is an adaptation and modification of the actual documented histories and legends of the Tuatha de Danaan of Celtic lore. Their origins as the nomadic Pelasgians of Greece was my inspiration for the proliferation of Latin used for the Silva Regia)

Long before the dark exodus from the lands of man, our people were of the sea, born of Dragon’s Teeth and the belly of the Shifting Goddess. They ruled an island and were Kings of their domain until wretched men came to take it from them. Cowards fled, but the Tuatha de Danaan left purposefully, to seek a better home to the north. They built a stronger tribe in a Kingdom by the sea, with four great cities led by Shamans of the wisest sort.
The young were taught the arts of war and to hunt. And they crafted weapons of great power, the four treasures, which were secreted one to a city and guarded by the greatest of their warriors. The hordes of man have wiped their names from us, and given them names in their lesser tongues, marking them as child’s tales and made up heroes.

The Kingdom waged war on many enemies. It destroyed the loathsome giant Firbolgs. And with the magics of the Sword of Lugh the hellborne Fomorian Giants were slain. Lugh, a mighty warrior, brought the Riders of the Sidhe from the Tir Nan Og, and by a pact to draw blood of the enemy together, the two races became one. When our elders tired of the loathsome human world, they left it behind to seek the wonders of the Fairy Realm. The Sidhe power opened the gateway for them, and they barred the entrance so that man could never follow to disturb them again. That was where they remained, in safety, for thousands of years.

The Faerie Ring

Men have their fools, and the Fey have theirs as well. Take this tale as warning of the foolishness of meddling with men.

Time passes swifter in our realm than the slow moving world of hated men.We lived in peace for 10 years by our reckoning, when a woman of magic, a fool who gave her heart to a mortal, in her foolhardy matter of heart reopened that which had been closed for good reason. Cantio the Spell Singer will forever be marked in infamy.

She and her grandsire before her were like animals, lying with men rather than with their own kind. They tainted the purity of the blood, and held these base creatures dear. When we were realeased to the safety and protection of Tir Nan Og, and allowed to finally remove ourselves from the foul presence of Mankind, Cantio was forced to leave her pet man behind, and the whelp she'd birth by him.

She mourned like a widow over these animals, and refuted the love of a warrior who had been betrothed to her by birthright. Instead, like a thief, she stole out of her tower each night to peer into an enchanted pond ringed by magical mushrooms she had warped with magics to spy on her pets in man's realm.

The noble Invidia followed her one night and when he devised her treachery, her threat to the compact that opened this place of refuge to us, he drew his blade and plunged it through her heart. But the witch being the foul thing she was, cursed us with her last breath. He buried her in the soil that had once been the enchanted window to man's world.

At the next full moon the magical mushrooms sprouted again, and glowed with a sinister light. The burial earth sucked in a young scout who was searching the woods for the missing sorceress. He appeared in the world of men, inside a ring which had grown there in mirror of the one in Tir Nan Og, outside the home of Cantio'spet and their whelp. He found he could cross back through the barrier, and returned to report it to the wise ones.

Thus it was that the first Faerie ring was created by treachery and curse. It was later learned that with Cantio's passing, her curse took hold. Whenever someone of great magical power, and a weakness for mortals was rightfully slain for their foul weakness, where they were buried another cursed ring would appear at the next full moon.

Through the rings anyone could pass between the worlds, fey and foul alike, and there was no means to secure them until much, much later. So it was that mankind would wander into the Realm of Fey, and treacherous men-loving Fey would be sighted in the Realm of Men.
