I just got back from a big college trip to California, and to make a long story short, every school I visited was like "WE WANT YOUUUU" except for Art Center. Which is great. I want a challenge, dammit. So they want this huge-a** whole portfolio thing made just for them. 40 some-odd 13"x19" pages of pure, professional concept art, visually developing a published or well-known story. The Abarat or Little Red Riding Hood, for example.
LUCKY YOU, Art Fags, you get to endure every bit of art produced for that school. Critique it to pieces, for if I don't get in, I'm blaming each and every one of you.

stuff you already know:
plate 1: Far right, dude could use some pants. Or hysterical digitization of privates.
plate 2: Top left, maybe clean up the facial features of the portrait to be a bit smoother (maybe, cause it could just be pixel shift from reducing it that I'm seeing) Top right, three large figures and four smaller ones. You may want to consider shifting them all to the same scale, cause just from a layout point of view, having so many changes in character scale on the same section irks me a little. And consider not cropping that one girl off at the clothes, makes her look like a multiple amputee or somethin. And the to overlapped drawings gotta get sorted out.
plate 3: One of these is not like the other. Consistency goes a long way.
Also consider doing a bucketfull of simple thumbnails for the main characters and perhaps some for the secondary characters as well. If you have or know anyone with a copy of "The Skillful Huntsman" take a look through that and see what they did. Also consider doing speed sketches of both characters and environments. Rendered characters are coming along nicely though. Time to mix it up a bit, and just go down the list (environments, architecture, props, vehicles, peripheral characters and extras, flora and fauna, and so on)
If I see something else I'll post it later, and remember if I say anything that goes against what someone from Art Center or The Industry said, listen to them not me.
I'd also like to say a couple things, to get it out of the way now: 1) I wish you all the best! 2) Rip em a new one.

Mexichu: omg I knoooow, my copy is all shredded and marked up I've read it so many times. It's so deep D: Nancy Farmer is such a great author. The Ear, the Eye, and The Arm may have been a better choice as far as this project is concerned, though... it's like, Future Africa, with skyscrapers next to mud huts, and that may have required a little more creativity. But I don't care. MATT IS MAH LUV.
Thank you kindly, Mr. Smite. None of this is really "done," hence the lack of pants and semi-completed portrait. I figured it'd be easier to get some wonderful crit like what you've given me if I wasn't so sure everything was done xD
The third page... It think I'm going to break them apart. Maybe two per page. But they're secondary characters, so they don't deserve entiiiire pages, and I don't have that many to spare for them anyway. I'll throw in some thumbnails too. Haha, I have to reverse-engineer all my art and make it look like I thought about it... *sigh*
YES SIR. I shall indeed rip them a new one. Muhaha.

I think that the children look odd. They sort of look like dwarves - their faces just seem too adulty. It's less present in the first than the second, but I think the hardness of the girl's features has a weird "adult face on a kid's body" effect.

Thanks for the advice, man. Kids are tough to draw. All my refs are like... models >_>; um. And I keep going back and forth from drawing this wrinkly-a** old guy to tweens XD I'll smooth out some things and see what it looks like.
ETA: Looks better already. She was giving me the sexy eyes before, now she's a little more soft and sweet looking. I'll post a pic with my next update, maybe this afternoon, since I have some critter thumbnails to put up.

'nother suggestion: Get some vehicles and environments done and looking gorgeous before school, 'cause it'll suck less when you're not spending all your non-school time workin on the stuff you're not jazzed about drawin. And even if you expect to have a lot of time during school, it's good not to leave all the parts you don't want to do 'till the end.
