1 Kings 19:1-3, 9-12- the message
1. Ahabe reported to Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, including the massacre of the prophets. 2 Jezebel immediately sent a messenger to Elijah with her threat: "The gods will get you for this and I'll get even with you! By this time tomorrow you'll be as dead as anyone of those prophets." When Elijah saw how things were, he ran for dear life to Beersheba, far in the south of Judah. He left his young servan there and then went on into the desert another day's journey.

9-12 Then the word of God came to him. "So Elijah, what are you doing here?"
"I've been working my heart out for the God of the angel armies," said Elijah. "The people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed the places of worship and murdered your prophets. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me."
Then he was told, "Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God, God will pass by."
A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God. But God wasn't to be found in the wind, after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn't in the earthquake, and after the earthquake, fire, but god wasn't in the fire. And after the fire, and gentle and quiet whisper.

"For God alone my soul waits in silence."

-Psalm 62:1 (NRSV)
ELIJAH was running from Jezebel, the evil wife of King Ahab. Elijah had been responsible for the death of the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-40), and Jezebel was determined that he should die.

Elijah was scared and depressed; he prayed to die. Eventually, God led him to the top of a mountain where a great wind came and threatened to blow him off. After that an earthquake violently shook the area, and then a blazing fire followed. But God wasn't in any of these things. As Elijah stood trembling, God spoke to him softly in a "still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12, KJV).

In our noisy world, it is sometimes hard to hear the quiet voice of God. Even when we pray in solitude, often we don't hear God speaking. Too many times we hurriedly tell God our wants and don't take time to listen. We make prayer a one-sided conversation.

We can hear God in the wind, the earthquake, and the fire. But often, as to Elijah, God speaks to us in a still small voice. Are we listening?

It's so true. With our busy lives running from here to there and God is trying to speak to us are we too busy to realize it's God? or in other cases trying to convince ourselves thatit was God speaking when in reality we know it wasnt.

I have been a born again Christian for 13 years. I first learned to listen to God's voice through his word. I started hearing his voice in dreams and then during prayer. It took a long time to learn to discern his voice over my own or the voice of the enemy. I had to learn to test the voice as the Bible warns us that Satan can come as an Angel of light. Test the voice you hear by asking "Did Jesus come in the flesh and die on the cross for me?" Also, the voice will line up with scripture. Over the years, I have learned to discern the voice of the Lord. Sometimes my mind still gets in the way, but I know that Jesus will always show me his truth even in the midst of my mental confusion.
