oO...Dead on Arrival...Oo
PostPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2005 7:19 pm

The bus broke down in a sheeting downpour. It was you and the driver--he volunteered to call you a cab, being a son of a kind of chivalry not seen much in the world anymore, but you turned him down and elected to walk. Though it was hours until night when you set out, the clouds were thick enough to submerge everything in a pea-soup gloom, and in short order you found yourself slipping and tumbling down a muddy deer-track, not sure how you'd gotten there and more than a little afraid to turn around.

At last, you stumbled out onto a flat area. It was sandy, and you could hear the sound of waves in the difference--meaning you'd probably found the beach at the cost of nearly wrenching an ankle or breaking a leg. By the time you thought to turn around and see where you came from, though, the fog had tightened around the deer track, leaving you adrift in a sea of white.

There was a golden glow up ahead, though, promising (maybe?) civilization...even if it was in the direction of those ocean sounds. Now what?

Despite the light from somewhere nearby, no answer came to Sin's pounding on the door. In fact--it creaked open after a moment, leaving a gaping hole in the fog that opened onto...

...a women's restroom, crude and concrete-floored. A single light--actinic white, not the gold of the light that pierced through the fog before--flickered fitfully on and off over the filthy sink, before dying entirely and leaving you alone in the fog once more.

The light still glowed, down off somewhere to your right, near where the noise of waves was coming from. Faintly--very faintly--you thought you could hear someone...singing?

Sin glanced around the bathroom, it's dank corners smelled faintly of mildew, and the light had not been the light that she had seen in the forest. I guess this wasn't where I was supposed to go, Sin thought, wishing that it wasn't so dark outside. The harsh light of the floressant bulb made her squint. Yes, at this point, the darkness was very worth it.

She walked back outside, leaving the door open, so that there was at least a little light outside, so that her shin's could not aquire any more bruises. Picking her way across the feild of pain again, she found that she could hear singing in the distance. Focusing her ears on the sound, she headed towards it. And, subsiquently, headed towards the light.

Ten minutes later, Sin felt as though she was no closer to the light or the music, but it had a catchy tune. As she walked, she smiled slightly and began to sing along with the simple melody. Her heart felt lighter as she moved down the steepening hill towards... the sound of waves?

Soon she was on the beach, the tide had just gone out, and the sand was still wet. In the distance, she could see the lights of a... town? Her pace quickened. What could be where the light was?

It was sort of a fun melody, wasn't it? Despite the fog, it was almost like the sort of thing you'd find yourself skipping to on a brilliant sunny day in some alpine meadow somewhere. Not this dreary beach.

The light grew stronger as Sin approached the water, until it was visible practically under...the surface of the waves? Yes--brilliant gold light shot up through the crashing waves, lending its glow to the fog immediately surrounding Sin. The singing seemed stronger out here--stronger right until it stopped on a lingering high C and trailed into silence.

There was, near the edge of the glowing crack in the seabed, a quick-filling pool of water with a number of tiny green eggs in it.

Sin bent down to examine the eggs, they resembled something akin to frogspawn, but as soon as she touched the clump, she was filled with a sort of maternal protectiveness that often comes when a mother first holds her babies. She squinted. What were these little eggs?

Reaching into her backpack, Sin pulled out her water bottle, and very carefully scooped the little eggs into them. She didn't want to risk hurting them, and at the same time, she was pretty positive that something was supposed to happen. The light told her that much.

She put the cap back on her water bottle and stared off into the distance. Beyond this fog, she was fairly certain that there was a building. Shrugging, she set off down the beach, tripping from time to time on the partially covered rocks.
