Ever listen to a band, and then out of nowhere they have a song that isn't anything like the rest of the songs?
I was listening to Revelation's Salvation's Answer, a Doom album with 80's Heavy metal influence, and at the beginning of "Images of Darkness" it starts with a nice Thrash riff. eek
(Not talking about when bands start playing a new genre on a new album, just where there's a random song or so that is very different from the rest.)

Would you count intro/outro pieces as part of this?

ashlander_alpha Would you count intro/outro pieces as part of this? Not really, but I guess passages in the main songs would.

The riff that pretty much pops out of no where in this song that starts around 4:45 seconds seams pretty random. I like it but it doesn't really fit the rest of the song. I know its not what you were trying to describe but anyhow...

Thats also, the only thing I can think of this time...

Overkill's song Skullcrusher is another good example, they're a thrash band, but this song is very much Doom.

Well, not metal but i think I'll throw this out there anyway: Walls of Jericho- on their Trigger Full of Promises album song 9, is this pollwe ballad, and it's very different than the usual in-your-face hardcore style that surrounds it on all sides.
