I don' keep the strict diet of fruits and vegetables. Yet i also don't always eat healthy or everything i am supposed to everyday. I find it kind of hard; especially when i am working around lunchtime, since i don't get a break. I also don't always drink enough water everyday like i am supposed to. Then my mom says that i could go overweight and he may get gestational diabetes which really freaks me out about my diet. Even though I am trying to keep on track it is just hard sometimes. So how many others had this problem of keeping up with their eating healthier diet.

(Not that all i had before i was pregnant was junk food, i just really didn't have to keep up with it before)

A few words of advice.

Listen to your body. It knows what it needs. If it needs calcium it might make you crave milk or ice cream. Try not to freak out about your weight either. Many pregnant women will eat veyr healthy and exercise right, lots of water to drink, and gain 35 lbs for their first pregnancy, and on the second just eat junk food and drink soda and gain..........35 pounds. It's good to eat healthy, of course, but don't let it bother you.

As far as gestational diabetes, it's a disease for the mom, not the baby. And it is usually caused by either extra pre-pregnancy weight, or a genetic disposition. It's not the end of the world if it happens, it just means your baby will be a little bigger.

Your genetic code has all the instructions for growing a baby written in them. Humans have made (B)ILLIONS of babies over time and is pretty good at it. OB's know this, which is why a lot of their job is just going with what nature has given them and making adjustments from there.

I agree with komorus. Your body will tell you what it needs. Just make sure you are staying hydrated (this can mean water, soda, tea... etc. It's all fluid) and taking your prenatal vitamins.

As far as weight gain goes, you are "pre-coded" to gain a specific amount of weight during pregnancy. Now, if you take "eating for two" literally, yes, you will gain more weight than is healthy, but if you're consuming the same amount of food/ a little more than before you were pregnant you will be fine.

The big key during pregnancy is: "Listen to your body". This is advice my doctor gave me. You know when you're okay, you know when something's not right.

Even the best diet doesn't have everything you need in it, so taking a prenatal is key to making sure you get all the nutrients your body needs. If you're doing that, breathe, relax, and stop worrying about what your fear-mongering mother is saying. And in my opinion, that is exactly what she's doing and it's more harmful then good. What is it helping to have you worry about not eating an extra serving of vegetables? A lot of things can cause GD, that isn't one of them. You have enough to worry about without being told that not keeping a puritanical diet is going to result in the end of the world. The next time she starts on that, I would kindly tell her that you understand she's concerned, but causing you excess worry and stress isn't good for your or your baby either.

You referred to your baby as a "he," so is it safe to assume that you're at least 18-20 weeks along and had an ultrasound? If your healthcare provider isn't worried and mentioning anything to you, your baby is developing as he should, and all your labs are coming back fine...well, then you're fine. If you aren't that far along yet, that's how you know if things are going well: baby develops as they should and your provider isn't mentioning anything that is concerning them. If s/he thinks that you're at risk for GD, s/he'll give you an early glucose tolerance test as well as the customary one at 28 weeks.

Everyone's diet and water requirements are different: they're as unique as we are. If you aren't as active, you may not need as much water as someone who is more active. Best way to tell is if you're having any signs that would indicate you aren't drinking enough liquids: are you constipated? Are you having dark-colored urine? If you're further along in pregnancy, are you having issues with braxton hicks contractions/uterine tightening? Are you getting headaches? If you are still worried and want to drink more water, ease into it. I try to drink about 2-4 oz an hour--on top of whatever else I'm drinking-- since having too much liquid in my stomach makes me feel sick and lends me unable to do much of anything until it clears out.

Best thing you can do is talk to your provider if you're having concerns.
