Women in homosexual relationships are frequently called gay, as well. The term "lesbian" comes from a legend (modified history?) of women from Greece if I remember right being taken to the island of Lesbos for formal training. It was speculated at the time and even more so now that these women were receiving training for more than housekeeping and the boudoir for their future husbands. It was frequently assumed that the women were in same-sex encounters on the island and when they came back would prefer said encounters and relationships over those with men. As far as I know, men didn't have such a place, so the term lesbian (from the island of Lesbos) is applied to female relationships with no special term for male homosexual relationships.

Isn't being a woman great? For once, we get the cool bit of history. ^_^

It also comes from the fact that Sapho, a Greek woman who wrote poetry on lesbian relationships, was born on Lesbos.
