So K-Chan and I went to our first glass blowing class today. We signed up to make these floating globe ornaments. We were each one-on-one with an instructor and an assistant who stepped us through what to do.
It was scary and fun all at the same time. Here you are standing in front of a two-thousand (not kidding!) degree furnace with a pool of white-hot molten glass, and turn it into a piece of art in less than 5 minutes with two simple tools. It's simply amazing to watch the colors unfold in the glass as it cools.
I guess for me it's the same as what roller coasters are to other people. It's a bit scary, thrilling, and when it's all over you want to go back and do it again biggrin
The pieces will be properly cooled and we can pick them up in a few days, so I'll post piccy's when we get them.

Cool, I've watched people do it before but never actually got to myself.

So I was sitting on the bench watching Dave rolling the pipe with his glob of moltent glass on one end....I mind you I was happy watching...
Then the dude....yes the nameless dude in the shades comes near to the rope that devides us from the pipe rolling others....and calls out..."who's next?" I swear his eyes looked directly at me, so I simply sunk a little bit...ok, honestly I tried to melt onto the floor. So in a very small voice I squeaked out..."me"....and inched towards the rope.
After what..10 min my green and purple sphere was placed into a cooling kiln, and I was asked to sign a paper so I could get it in a few days.
I wanna take classes with the warm shop (beads and sculptures) and the Text and Imagery on Glass classes now. The one we went into today was in the Hot shop area....I asked to see if the other guys had hair on their arms or not. XD

Oh yeah, even though your hand is about 8 inches away from the glass with those tools it gets SERIOUSLY hot on your skin after a couple of minutes. If you've ever held your hand about an inch above a candle flame, that's about what it feels like. sweatdrop
But yah, I'm hooked and wanna do more... 3nodding
Wolf, maybe you can see if there's something like an artists workshop in your area. We found out about the classes through one of the several art festivals that go on this time of year. The beginner class was only $25 to sign up for, but some of the others can go as high as $250 for the studio time.

Too true. xd
They actually recycle the heat from the glass furnaces to heat the rest of the building in the winter. surprised

There could be. This area is pretty lame but I'm sure they have something interesting somewhere.
