It was such a liberating feeling-- the ripples through her smooth fur, the cool rush against her body as she spiraled upwards, faster and faster...
With a gasp, Maiele broke the surface, sending riverwater flying in all directions. She watched with a quiet smile as the drops glittered and glimmered, catching the sunlight, before raining down all about her. The female closed her eyes briefly, delighting in the cool shower; oh, how she loved being by the water, especially during this blistering season!
From birth, Maiele harbored a close affinity to the blue element, though she couldn't begin to explain why. Perhaps it was her pelt, the color of calm waters, that allowed her to meld into the gentle waves and eddies. Or it could be her small, sleek body, allowing her faster movement through water than most others.
Too bad being tiny won't help anywhere else, Maiele thought sadly, climbing nimbly out of the river. Shaking out her damp fur, the female took a few hesitant steps forward, leaving a glistening trail behind her paws. While she excelled in the water, Maiele had to be extra cautious on land; her size and stature made her an easy target for any bigger wolf wanting to pick a fight.
The coast looked clear. With a small sigh, the she-wolf began to trot, searching for a sunny place to dry off.

She found her place by a clump of water-reeds, close to the riverbank. Sticking a petite nose into the air, Maiele caught a whiff of the winds-- cool, and refreshing. With no sign of any other wolves, fortunately. With a sigh she sank into the soft reeds, stretching out what little of her body there was.
Maiele wished every summer day could be like this: a relaxing glide through the water, a sunny spot to lounge for awhile. All while being undisturbed. It wasn't that she was averse to company; it was just that all the other wolves she'd seen seemed... bigger, stronger... and even meaner, perhaps. It wouldn't take much work for them to turn Maiele into a flat wolf-cake...
Shaking her head, aqua eyes squeezed tight, the female willed herself not to think of these things.
I'm here to -relax-, after all...!

She lay there, drifting between dreams and awakening, her grey-tipped ears flicking at the soft hum of junebugs and fireflies. But it had not even been five minutes when Maiele abruptly lifted her head, her aqua eyes alert. The sun had temporarily drifted behind a blanket of clouds, plunging the land around her into a gray, gloomy mist.
Already? the female thought a bit sadly, turning her slender neck to survey the area. It was then that she noticed that the clearing was strangely silent, the only sound the gurgling of the river waters. Where was the patter of smaller creatures, the drone of the summer bugs that she had heard not minutes ago?
Maiele got to her feet, her small frame tensed as she glanced around. Then, came a soft crackle from the brush behind her...

What was that...?
Her heart began to patter within her chest, her eyes wide; Maiele froze where she stood, not daring to make any sudden moves. The river was nearby, it wasn't too far to make a dash for it... but what if whatever it was managed to catch her as she ran? Maiele's short legs were definitely not made for the land...
The crackling behind her had stopped. Still, the female remained motionless, breathing in small, shallow pants. Her blue ears pricked, listening for the faintest sounds of movement...
"...Ele? ....Where the blazes did ya run off to? Maiele!"
The voice was distant, but growing nearer as it called. The female let out a long, subdued sigh, her ears and head lowering. The voice was a familiar one. Once again, looked like she had got worked up over nothing...
