Years ago, I had a Game Boy. The original deal. Left it on the table overnight. Also on the table was a bottle of vegetable oil. The puppy we had at the time got on the table, and chewed the bottle. The Game Boy got soaked, and was found the next morning on the floor in a puddle of vegetable oil that had partially congealed into a viscous crud.
After I got the cartridge out (which was a task in itself), I wiped it and the Game Boy down. After I swabbed the socket with a q-tip and alcohol? Worked fine.
Y'know... as much as I'd like to say that that was a result of Nintendo's product... immortality...

Vegetable oil isn't nearly the threat you're making it out to be... and I do believe that there's a significant complexity increase compared to the gameboy...

However, water isn't all too bad to electronics either... SO LONG AS IT'S NOT POWERED WHEN WET... if there's no power, then it can be dried, cleaned if necessary, then put back into service... but if it's powered and wet... it shorts... and dies...
*of note, game boy cartridges have a small lithium battery that *may* be enough to kill the cartridge/gameboy if the device is wet/shorted with it intact*

Then again, Nintendo puts out some nice, quality stuff... as opposed to the MS"s 360's "red ring of death" and the ps3's myriad of problems...

I'm not saying the others aren't good... but it just seems like Nintendo's got a rep of quality... o.o
