I can't seem to write a good hook. I have many ideas floating all around my head, but can't seem to get anyone, other than people with the basis of it already in their head, interested. I'm just no good at hooks and need advice!

When it comes to openings, I like to jump into a novel. Therefore when a novel (or any other writing) starts off with a scene, people talking, battling, etc. People are saying names, talking about things the reader has no clue about.. and then as the story progresses explain or gather indirect knowledge on what was going on in the opening scene.
But that is just me.

gonk I am not one to be asked...
However, I must say that most feedback I get is because of my characters. It's always my characters that people want to read more about. That seems to be my 'hook'.

Hooks that I like, in the terms of starting out a story or novel, is when someone says something or when you describe the place they're in, like a room or the scenery of the place. This gives people a good visual and then you can get into what the character/characters are doing there and such. Of course, I usually have the same problem as you... sweatdrop

In my experience, the thing that hooks the best is leaving the reader with a question. I'll give you an example (my own writing).
This is my confession. People say I will go to hell for what I’ve done, but I don’t really know. All I know is that if I don’t write everything down, people will forget, and I can’t let that happen. I need to be remembered, and I need people to remember the monster they created. I hope they make the same mistake again; they deserve to be punished a thousand times for what they did. That’s what I tried to do, and I hope I did a good job of it. I’m only book one, though. There are many more of them, written by other sinners like me. We stuck together and punished the human race for what they did.
See, it poses the question: "What did he do?". I suggest you try doing that with your writing. It's always worked for me. ^ ^
