Pink has explained that she noticed many young girls near her Los Angeles home aspire to the hypersexual personae of female celebrities (often ones who are famous for being famous, such as Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan ) rather than careers or talents. She was inspired to write "Stupid Girls", in which she deplores the lack of good role models for girls while encouraging them to cultivate independence and individuality. "There's a certain thing the world is being fed, and my point is there should be a choice", Pink said. Pink said the song was "brought on by several conversations I've had with women and girls. Women have fought so long and hard for our rights and equality, and now all our attention is put on being a size 0", adding that some are "living vicariously through these people who seem to shop all day" rather than focusing on issues such as war and poverty. According to International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, the song "highlights the culture's relentless and unrealistic pursuit of thinness and unattainable drive for physical beauty". Pink discussed what she called the "Stupid Girl epidemic" during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
To those who get the channel Much More Music, they have a show called "Profile" where they feature different musicians and showcase some of their biggest hits, with clips from interviews sandwiched in between.
Anyways, they have an episode featuring Pink, and while I can't find it online, there's a really good quote about her talking about women's body issues and how society/women are "heading in the wrong direction." There's also another really good quote from the same episode about how girls should love who they are and how they look because they're beautiful as they are.
So anyways, this spotlight is to promote this awesome, funny, and true music video. Kudos to Pink for making it and for speaking her mind!
