So for about the past week, i haven't been at home. Why? Smoke.
Toastie's dad started smoking again recently after quitting for about 19 years. Toastie is allergic to most kinds of smoke. Cigarette and Cigar smoke seems to have the worst effect on her making her cough and it feels like her throat is swelling up, generally making it difficult to breathe. So far it hasn't been TOO bad. He's at work for long periods of time and she's usually working when he is home, so he doesn't have time to be smoking around her when she's not sleeping in her room or at work or whatever...
But this month Toastie's had morning shifts. Now they're great shifts to have because although you have to get up early in the morning, you have the majority of the day to actually do stuff when other people are awake as opposed to getting up at noon and going to work and then being wide awake at 3 in the morning. Except Toastie's dad has also had days off on these days, so the two of us have had an unusually large amount of time awake and at home at the same time... and unfortunately Toastie just couldn't stand the amount of smoke that built up in the house while he was home. So she packed up a bag and sought refuge at the boyfriend's house until he went back to work.
Sooooo what this means is instead of being at home with her desktop computer and her tablet, she's connecting to the internet from her new lappy through Aaron's finicky connection and sleeping in the lumpy guest room with two pillows instead of her own soft bed and six pillows and her kitty purring over her head.
Aaand Toastie's about ready to lose it. I mean it's one thing for her dad to start smoking again, but the reason he had to stop in the first place was because Toastie was allergic... now i realize he goes to work with all of his buddies and almost everyone there smokes and it's probably a huuuge struggle to keep under control... but that doesn't mean that he needs to do it in the house, and it doesn't mean that he needs to act like a fricken chain smoker lighting up a fresh one seconds after he finishes off the first. I'm just so sick and tired of it. I mean can't he just go outside and light one up and then come back in and not need to smoke? Does he really need to make up for those 19 years all in one week?
Srsly. He just reeks of smoke all the time, and wherever we go he's lighting up in the car and smoking the entire way there and then until he gets inside the building (all public buildings are smoke-free here.) and then when we leave, he lights up right after we get into the street and smokes all the way home. I can't even ride in the same vehicle with him without hanging my head out the window because he gets upset whenever i ask him to open the window so the smoke doesn't blow into my face. Even more upset than when i ask him to smoke outside instead of in the house.
So he's going back to work pretty soon.. which is good, because i'll finally be able to get a good night's rest in my own bed for once. I HATE SMOKERS. AAARGHSHJF crying

Ugh. That sucks. D: I cant STAND smoke. People smoke in public and I want to give them dirty glares, or walk up take their cigarette and smash it into the ground.
Tell your dad to quit again, or show him shock images or something. Probably not the best idea, but just tell him you can't be home if he's gonna smoke. Find SOME way to convey the idea to him. Bleeech. I smell it and I wonder why the hell anyone would inhale that willingly, but they do anyways. -3-

I know how you feel. I is allergic to cigarette smoke too. When I go to my grandma's house in Kentucky everyone has to smoke in the kitchen and I stay in the front room where I can't smell it. If I am still around it much I get like a bad fever and throw up a lot. But public buildings are smoke free in IL thank goodness.

Well, there's a couple things you can do... since you've already voiced your displeasure, and he knows that you don't take smoke very well...
1. Stay away from him if at all possible. Generally, move fast around him, don't be in the same room, try not to ride with him... etc. Generally, just treat him as if he's got a "cloud of death" around him... this'll be good for you, and it may very well hammer the point down that you don't like the smoking.
2. Incense, air fresheners, etc... and lots of it. Wherever you can get away with it, light up lots of incense, spray air fresheners, wear lots of perfume (especially when you're stuck hanging around him)... it'll help with the smell at least, and also serves to hammer the point down that you don't like being around his smoking.
3. If at worst, and you have no other alternatives... get some type of "gas mask" or something (even a shirt or a rag up around your face to help you breathe, maybe dampened)... this isn't just his life he's hurting, it's yours... not only is it having immediate effects on you, but it IS still smoke, that's tarring up your lungs, that's filled with all sorts of noxious chemicals... etc. There's way too much scientific research pointing to this being a bad thing to be ignored.
That, and good luck. And I hope you don't wind up with any more severe respiratory ailments... x_x

When I was a kid, up to age seven, both of my parents were chain smokers and smoked around me frequently. Then I developed asthma. My mom quit (she's restarted again but doesn't smoke around me), but my dad kept smoking (though not around me) until he developed asthma and pulmonary problems himself.
Point is, when they're addicted to nicotine, they don't consider themselves responsible for the damage they cause you. It's a disease, not a personal attack... and yet, they choose to keep that disease.
Run for the hills, Toastie.

My dad had to quit smoking when he had a heart attack. He told us all he quit. But then I found chewing tabaco on the refrigerator and caught him lighting up in the backyard. I cried.

D: That seriously sucks Toastie. Have you asked your dad why he doesnt care about your health? Ask it all innocently and not accusingly and maybe he'll feel bad and cut down? I dunno.
What does your mom have to say about it?

I already do many of the things you guys all mentioned. I can't light incense unfortunately, since it creates smoke when it burns which i'm also allergic to. One good thing though is that i have plenty of air freshener. It just doesn't work very well when he's actively smoking. I also tend to hammer open every window i can get to whenever he lights up around me in the house, no matter the weather. My mom freaked when i opened the windows during a lightning storm a while ago because he was smoking during supper.
Unfortunately my mom doesn't really care. When she married him he was a smoker, so she knew what she was getting herself into, plus he's apparently in a good mood much more often than usual when he smokes and she's just happy that he's not yelling and storming around the house when he is home. In all honesty, i think my parent's outlook on the whole situation is "she's going to be moving out soon anyway, so it really doesn't matter." Which kind of sucks... because it DOES matter. :/ I might try playing the guilt card and ask why he doesn't care next time he comes home. I have to do something at least, i can't keep running away or it'll just get worse.
ks: isn't that the worst feeling in the world? That like.. muted disappointment mixed with sadness. :/ yuck.

Just start leaving random articles related to second hand smoke lying around the house casually.
Invest in an ionic breeze or two, and try to beat it into his skull and remind him you're allergic.
I hate smoke from smokers. I don't hate the people, I hate the actions.
@KS: Chew tobacco/smokeless tobacco is just as evil. :< I hate people in school advertise their "chew grade" and "how many cans are in my pocket right now".

Better yet... just build one things on this page (the mesh/glass one looks easy, and good) HERE, and hide it in a corner, or just put one in your room or something... Ozone: Gaseous bleach... Rips carcinogens to shreds... ^_^ That, and thought it might not be a good idea, you might want to "fake" a "breathing episode"... maybe not as bad as an asthma attack... but something that shows that it's really taking a toll on you... That, and after you leave, and when they expect you to come home to visit... just ask "Is dad gonna be smoking in the house while I'm there"... and if they raise a fuss, or say he is... then just don't go... pretty soon it'll get nipped in the bud, if they care about you, that is... And if not, then you've got relatives you can complain to, right? In fact, that might be a good idea now... complain to some relatives (grandmas and grandpas would be nice if you could), and get 'em to say something to your parents... But yeah, your situation does suck... horribly.

Both sets of my grandparents are dead. My mom's brother lives in ontario, and my dad's siblings are all muuuch worse than him and live in alberta. They're pretty much trailor trash with houses the rate that they drink and smoke at, so i don't really have anyone to turn and complain to. :/
Ionic Breeze? is that like a purifier? We have some purifiers for smokey rooms at work, they work absolute wonders. Which makes me wonder what they cost... :/
