Since I am learning about Finland and about the Finnish language, can anyone please be so kind to tell us about Finnish folklore and mythology, mostly predating when Christianity came into Finland (although I do understand that customs and religious traditions tend to mix in over time).

I am not sure if this is a part of Finnish or Russian folklore but there was a certain plant that can open up anything with locks in it. Sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Kiitos!!

Well, from what I've read, it was many different things in the Norse regions, including paganism and such. 3nodding

Also, I reccommend reading Kalevala, since it's pretty much THE book when you want to know some Finnish folklore. surprised I think it's been translated in English too so look it up. 3nodding

Yes. I've wanted to read the Kalevala for a long time too. I heard Ensiferum's Kalevala Medley and so I looked up some translations and such. It's pretty interesting. 3nodding

Good luck there. I can pretty much guess that not even many of Finns have read Kalevala. Portions of it aye, but through.. I'm going to do it myself as soon as I get another big and heavy book off my hands.
And after that those poems that were left outside Kalevala. (There is quite a lot of those too)

Shokai: A plant that can open up anything...? From this instant, I can't recall such a thing so it might be Russian lore or story from eastern part of Finland that is not commonly known. It does remind me of a flower that translates to cat's bells.

Here's a pro! I've read Kalevala thorough two times and studied the meanings behind finnish mythology.

Feel free to ask anything that pops into your mind heart

Did you know, that only about 10% of the population of Finland understand the old language that the Kalevala is written in?
