Impulsively, I endeavored to convert my mp3 player to a vaguely steampunk item.

With a brown Sharpie.

And nail polish.

Needless to say, it don' look so good.

I ask that others share stories of botched creations that make me feel less incompetent.

I was modding an old FMA pocket watch. Needless to say I was lucky it was already broken.
xD
Well, I managed to get it back together enough. It looks pretty cool now. I just need to paint it. I took the face out and now you can see the innards and turned the hands around so now instead of them being black they are a nice brass. Hooray for cheap Chinese products not having both sides of they're products painted.

Sharpies! blaugh
Do I have a story that will make you feel better!
(however, I wasn't making steampunk things...)

A couple Halloweens ago, I decided to dress up as Stephen from Braveheart, because of this long joke, yadda yadda. However, I needed a brown/leather vest. Which I didn't have. And all the thrift stores were closed.
But I did have duck tape! And a brown sharpie to colour it with.

So I laid my vest out on the floor and began to cover it with tape when a friend walked in, asked what I was doing, and walked out (I was in a dorm). So I put down a strip, and from next door I hear my other friend yell "Sssargonnnnn! Don't commit foooolery! I'm cooooooming!" and a minute later he runs in with a brown vest, throws it at me, and yells "Why didn't you ask!?"

So I (or my vest) was saved.
I still hold that it was a good backup plan.

I tried to make goggles using DIY instructions found on Brassgoggles...

They didn't turn out so badly, but they were too small and I wound up using lenses made of milk jug plastic --giving them a frosted look and not allowing anyone to use them as actual goggles-- and attached them to a hat. As a first try, I'm proud of them, but I wouldn't use them for much more than a laugh..
