Do any of you guys have paint horses that get their noses sunburned? Dakota's been having a problem with that lately, so I put sunscreen on him. I've been told that people sunscreen is fine for horses, so I picked out the most sensitive one that I could. Except he's got these little scabby things on his nose now. He sunburned last year and never got them, but this year he's on pasture. Could this be dew poisoning? The scabs aren't very big, they're just little hard crusty things. Or is this like when a person's skin peels after a sunburn?

i don't exactly know, so i'm not the best authority on this, but i don't think its a problem, although i can't see the scabs, so yeah. but one of our new draft crosses at the barn has a pretty bad sunburned nose, and its getting scabby, and i asked one of the trainers about it and she said they are putting sunscreen and something else on it to protect and heal it. its kinda like people sunburns...owww....haha.

I would get the highest SPF sun screen creme as you can.

I don't think the scabs are anything serious probably just dry skin.
Yes their is purple sunscreen but after lots of use it actually makes your horses hair turn purple D;
Maybe you should shop around for sunscreen that is actually made for horses xD

Best of luck.

The stuff I'm using is 30 spf. His nose looked a bit better today and I put some more on before our trail ride, but I couldn't put more on after it because he scratched his nose on some thorns. Nothing bad, just little scratches that would make putting sunscreen on hurt it. I tried to get horse sunscreen for him last year, but it was sold out. The person selling it (my lesson teacher/barn owner) said that she's had the actual horse sunscreen company tell her that human sunscreen works just fine. It might wash off faster though...I don't know about that part.

Just continue with what your using if its working.
And remember if you woulden't use it then why would you use it on your horse?
