It was a rainy day, not unusual for the time of year, but this one would be special. Syd wanted to adopt a child from an orphanage (much to the dismay of the other beings in his house), and today was the day that he would do just that. He was truly excited, for this would be his son or daughter, and he would raise her to the best of his ability. He did not care what the child looked like, he just felt that he wanted to become a parent to someone else. He was thinking all of these things, and he almost hadn't noticed that he had arrived at the small tan building that was where he would meet his future. The walls were cracked, and the building was in dire need of a repair, but the limited funding the facility had served what it could. Syd made his way indoors, noting the cracks in the sidewalk (and almost tripping over a few of them) and began to wonder if he came to the wrong place. His thoughts were dashed when he entered the facility though. He saw children of every race, and species playing together...all but one. This one was sitting by herself, rubbing the scar on her cheek as if it were only freshly created. She looked around, and while the other children would glance over to her on occasion, they would never approach her. They would never play with her, not once. Syd found a chair (avoiding the dilapidated ones), and sat to observe this situation for a minute, for a minute of this girl's life was really all he needed to convince him that this would be his child.
It was at that moment that the director of the facility came in and noted her 1:00 appointment for adoption of one of the children was sitting in a chair watching them.
"They're all angels, every one of them. Even that one..." With that, she pointed right to the child that a few moments ago was the subject of Syd's observation. He was somewhat amused when he saw that some of the other children had congregated near her, and were on their best behavior with her. No doubt because the authority figure was watching them, and they had to play with her. The woman finished her sentence as Syd thought: "...but we sometimes have trouble getting her to do anything with us."
Syd thought only one thing at that point: 'Yeah, the problem that you have with her is that no one interacts with her. I wouldn't trust such an environment either. From what I can tell, this is not a good facility for her to be in, if she should belong in any facility to begin with. Of which she probably doesn't.' Syd would have said something to that extent, yet he stilled his tongue so as not to upset the woman, and lessen his chances of being a parent today.
"It can be hard to live in an orphanage sometimes.", were the words that trailed out of his mouth. He finished in saying: "Be that as it may, I think that that little girl will be the one that I take home with me today."
The director nodded in approval, almost letting a small smile give away her glee at the possibility of ridding herself of a child she truly did not want to care for. The baby girl would not play with her when she tried to play simple games with her, and it would cry in the night for no apparent reason (and not the simple cryings of a newborn mind you; these were almost wailings)
The director of the facility took the both of them into a private room to get better acquanted with each other, and sat inside to observe the goings on. In the room there were toys of all sorts, stuffed animals, bouncing balls, just anything really that a small child could think to suit their fancy. Syd brought the little girl into his right arm, and with his left snatched a stuffed animal for her to play with. He then began to talk to her, and smiled alot while doing so. The child gave off a weak smile, and brought the stuffed toy close to her in a warm embrace. The little one looked up from her revelry in a moment though, and tears swelled in her eyes. Surely, this man was not going to stay with her, that was just not something that was done. No one had stayed with her before, so this should not be any different. And then the tears began in earnest, along with long cries, and the stuffed animal falling from her arms. Syd brought the girl up to his arms in an embrace of his own, and began to whisper that he was here for her, not one to leave her. Eventually, the girl's sobs lessened, and eventually died out. It seemed that being held was something that she wanted to savor.
The trio stayed in that particular room for over an hour, after which, they set about to making their way to the facility proper where the playing area that Syd had first came in upon was. Immediately the girl that was still in Syd's arms grew anxious...was he truly going to abandon her?
"So will you be taking her with you?" the grey haired woman said, pleading in her head that he would say yes.
"I will. I think we'll make a great pair", he said with a smile.
"She needs a name, we haven't done that for her," the director said, her voice painfully giving away the fact that she was excited for the little girl to be leaving her.
"I think that I shall name her Kima. It seems like such a lovely name, and I can think of nothing better for her than lovely things." Syd said, contented with the girl somewhat squirming in his arms. Kima was still squirming when she heard her name for the first time. She stopped moving, and looked up. Kima...she had heard that name before. She had heard people call her that before. She did not remember, however, the conditions upon where she knew that name from, nor the circumstances of why people called her Kima. She did not mind that he called her Kima, and stopped squirming in his arms as a result.
"Kima it'll be then! I'll just get the necessary paperwork together for you, and you'll simply need to sign where necessary." And with that, the director half walked-half ran to get the forms together to get Kima out the door.
The signing process was quicker than Syd expected, and in the end of things, the director - she introduced herself as Kaye at the end of the experience - smiled and wished the pair a happy life together. Shutting the door to the facility, Kaye let out a smile and hoped that she would not have to see the girl again.
It had stopped raining, and the air seemed cool. Syd had a jacket on, that had dried at that point. Realizing that it may be a little cold for Kima, he brought her inside his jacket to walk her to the car, where he had already bought a non-gendered carseat, as he was not clear as to if he would be getting a son or a daughter today. He would make it a point to change that to make it fitting for Kima, as he wanted to give her all the things that he could that would not only make her happy, but would allow her to grow healthily. He had not, however, anticipated for a fox tail, and thus, the seat was somewhat uncomfortable for Kima. He did not live far though, and so the trip was reasonably calm. Kima had never seen the outside of the orphanage, and so took in every sight she could...missing alot, yet still grasping more. When she arrived home, it was around four o'clock, and the small family Syd already had welcomed her with open arms. She had finally found it, she had finally found a home where people might love her.
That evening, Syd made sure that everyone stayed relatively close to her, and thus they all got their sleeping bags and stayed in the biggest room they could. Kima herself was placed in the most comfortable setting Syd could find, and thus slept soundly for a change.

Kima woke up the next morning to find herself in an unfamiliar setting...she was not in the orphanage like she was the day before, and the month before that, and rest of the short months of her life. No, she was in a tent of sorts, with various beings sleeping around her. There was a griffin looking thing purring near an even larger gargoyle, also making purring noises, only deeper and more profound, an elf sleeping by himself near her, a fairy rested on a mound of pillows that she probably didn't need, and a woman propped up against the gargoyle, all of these just from her first recollection. She did not know exactly where she was, but the idea of all of these being so close to her was a very welcome thought, so she chose to rest a little more hoping they would stay with her like this forever.
Syd woke up later that morning, after much pleading from Elise to get him up. He sighed, pulled what little covers he had on off of his weary form, and turned to look at the small child resting soundly. Almost without thought, he scooped her up, rocked her a little, and held her to his shoulder while he made his way to the kitchen to make everyone's breakfast. He was unaware that the little girl had awakened only moments before, when he put her to his shoulder. She did not want to lose this special moment of contact with someone else, someone whom apparently accepted her for whom she was, and thus kept still and silent. Elise, on the other hand, did notice the little girl had awakened. Naturally, she wanted to hold her baby sister, or at least play with it. Syd was about to put his hand up to his mouth in a signal of telling her to be quiet, but he also noticed at that point the little girl's arm move, and decided to let her play with her older sister.
Kima was unsure of her surroundings, and so she started to fear losing the precious moment of contact she did have. Thus she began to sob and cling to Syd's shirt, which was not a pleasant feeling given her feet had claws on them. At that point, Syd did his best to calm Kima down, a challenge given that she was terrified and he had a good inclination why. So Syd went over to the living room, called for some of the rest of his charges - especially Elise, and gave the little girl a stuffed toy to play with. The group made a circle around Kima, and started to hug and play with her. Mirai took her in her arms, and gave her littlest sister a nice embrace. The group showered her with affection for over an hour while Syd prepared all of their breakfasts...but Kima puzzled him. What would she desire?
He would get his answer soon enough, when he remembered that he still had formula that was not spoiled in his cabinet. So he got the formula and added it to milk, doubly ensuring the vitamins and nutrients would be there for her when needed. He then made sure that the others were well taken care of, with foods of all kinds for Elise, Mirai, and the other human looking inhabitants, and a variety of meatstuffs for Xethria, and burnt fare for Cerean. Then, taking Kima up into his arms once more, he put the bottle he had filled with formula to her mouth. It took her a very short time to suckle it to nothingness, as she was very hungry (she tended to mistrust the food that the orphanage people gave her, when others were not stealing her food - the main reason she tried to violently grab the bottle from Syd's hands - of which Syd kept a firm grip on it).
After she had finished with her meal, Syd held her to his chest to burp her, allowing her to feel his heartbeat once again. The rhythm was steady, and it put her into a gentle sleep-like daze once he was done patting her back. Not wanting to disturb her rest, Syd chose to eat later than the others, who saw that the pair were not to be disturbed. They took the perishables to the kitchen, sealed them, and promptly made sure they were refrigerated. Syd waited until Kima had fallen back into sleep, then handed her over to Mirai. The girl felt the cool, and then the warmth, and then the vibrations of another heartbeat, an unfamiliar one. This pair of arms felt warm too, but not the same warmth. Mirai slowly made her way with Kima in her arms to the rocking chair that Syd liked that sat near the fire, and let her baby sister stay in her arms, sleeping, while their father devoured his meal. Waiting the half an hour extra to eat left him ravenous, and it showed painfully in his table manners.
The rains continued that day, but the warmth inside the home was not to be lessened...

Turel bounded up to the door of Kima's home & rapped loudly on the door, leaving the mask in a small box filled with sunny yellow tissue paper to cushion the fragile object. The young TOR chuckled & scampered away, leaving the Kima to collect the prize she had thoroughly deserved to win. ((If you would like the image of the mask itself without embellishments for your journal, please let me know ^^))

Syd picked up the mask and was very pleased to give it to Kima. He knew she thought it would be pretty, so he was happy she could win it. He was worried though....that story...where'd it come from? Was it a part of her past? All Syd really knew at that point was that he wanted to show his appreciation to little Turel for the mask and for letting her go to her first real party where she wasn't sitting in a corner somewhere.
