User ImageHe should've strut around with a sign. Yes. That would've gone a whole lot better. It could've read: 'Warning. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for pointing out any mental illnesses or physical defects you idiots already seem to have. You have a problem with that, take it up with someone else.' Well. Okay. That was a little wordy and definitely a bit cruel and judgmental, but he had never said he was nice. People usually cowered in fear, or came up trying to be all goody-two-shoes. This, naturally, brought a downright scowl onto his furry muzzle.

The days were never easy. Always someone or other bugging him for something, or pointing out his disastrous color scheme that reeked of evil and blood. Of course, he didn't care. He'd just glare, curse them out a little, and move on with life. Kitsu were annoying bitter things and so, he liked to take himself away. Oddly enough, it had just rained and so the fields were pretty much empty. Various puddles had formed, some of which were now turning into muck puddles of thick gooey brown liquid. Twitching a little, he unfurled his wings a moment and then closed them up again. He didn't like making a big deal out of them.

It never mattered. He'd rather keep quiet and hidden, lest he incur some hidden wrath or idiot trying to talk to him. Yes. That was the highlight of his day. Getting rid of idiots who happen to cross his path. Wonderful! Today, he surmised, would be no different.

User ImageCold and wet were typically two things little Evie couldn't tolerate, but for mud - glorious, enthralling, squishy mud - she always made an exception. Scale-flecked tails swung in half arcs of unimpeded glee as she splashed around in the watery depressions provided by varying terrain, squealing with laughter when the thicker concoction beneath sucked at the pads on her feet and tried to pull her further into its embrace. She played a game of narrowly escaping, letting her slender frame stay still long enough to sink a few inches until she leapt out or hit bottom, darting around in a mad tangle of soft, metallic colors and sunshine held captive in the still-clean portions of her hair. No one needed to question whether or not the spirited girl was having a good time, the answer clearly on display in her guileless features, koi-orange irises gleaming like fireworks while her tiny, pearly were bared in a full grin.

It was shaping up to be a damp season, but the kitsusagi didn't want to waste even a moment of it waiting for a playmate to enjoy the rain-pelted scenery with, especially since she hadn't seen Hex in a while. Venom... she hadn't seen him either, although he was more the type to make his own mud with the wet stuff that dribbled from his mouth in warm, sticky torrents. It would have been, she reflected, almost perfect for mud castles, the consistency ideal for holding the kitsu-made structure together, if only he could produce enough of it.

A shiver of movement brought Eve's thoughts around from what her friends were missing, the young female snatching her snout away from where she had plunged it into a particularly charming puddle. Her stare found something darker than the environment would have provided naturally, splotched with spots more murderous-seeming than the innocent filth that touched her own fey face. She tilted her head sideways, dislodging a portion of slimy earth from her ear before starting immediately forward, her tails wagging a greeting while her voice was overcoming the distance between them. "Hullo! Were you gonna play too? There's a real good puddle over there. It's deeeeeeep."

To the male kitsu's favorable content, he had found a patch of land that was impeccably dry and stable, not to mention conveniently located near this mud-covered monster that seemed to be addressing him. Oh joy of joys. It seemed that his day was possibly going to take that turn for the worst. Already he was being harassed by a would-be interestingly beautiful kitsu, had she not been covered in mud. Not, of course, that Ashmait'Liura had any sort of connection with any gender. He preferred to avoid them all, thanks much. But still... he was quite sure most female creatures didn't exactly enjoy mud bathing as a number one hobby.

Flicking his wings a little, as if making sure there was no mud on the blood-spotted membrane, he turned his crimson gaze upon the other and stared. Really now. Why did he have to run into one of them today? He would've groaned had he not been so upset about the whole thing. She was covered in mud, she was chipper, and she was annoying. It was everything he hated rolled into one undeniably boring package. And that package was trying to talk to him. Really, things couldn't possibly get any worse.

Sitting lazily with his tails curled about him, he flicked his ears a little and narrowed his eyes,
"Feh." He didn't even want to talk to her, respond to her, even telling her to go away would've been more than enough. That would probably make her ask why, or ignore him entirely, and then she would be close enough by then to get him all dirty, at which point his temper would rise, and it would not be good. He was pretty mild-mannered except for the fact that he really didn't like anyone because all the world was made up of idiots.

Wings that had attracted her gaze once earned the girl's immediate attention again when they rustled with motion, the fineness of their craftsmanship filling Eve with childish fascination while she closed up the last few feet that separated them. The youth flexed her toes with a musing air, obviously wanting to do more than simply look now that she was close enough to make contact. But she resisted just barely upon spotting the way he regarded her, firmly planting her feet in the ground to show her willingness to restrict them, even if the resolve was doomed to be squashed by intrigue.

When a response was finally lobbed her way, it was not at all the one she had eagerly anticipated, a subtle ridge of confusion drawing between her muck-riddled brows as she leaned closer, peering quizzically at the curt line his mouth made. "Feh?" She repeated with an owlish blink, tilting her head this way and that, as though tempted to shake herself out so that the mud couldn't dry in tacky clumps to her fur. What did feh mean? Had he swallowed a fly while trying to say something else? For instance, what an excellent idea she had and how he would love to join her right this very second, if not sooner. The girl pondered the mistaken circle her thoughts made for all of a heartbeat before her smile returned in full force, deciding to clamber up onto the rather small platform of dryness he had claimed.

"I'm Eve," She practically trilled, reaching out a gentle paw to touch his foreleg, the greeting harmless save for the amount of wet dirt she had slathered herself in. "There are lots of bugs out here, huh? They leave you alone if you get wet enough... most of 'em, anyway. Guess they don't like mud 'less they get to fly over it or something." She paused, innocently evaluating him for a moment and kindly offering: "D'you want a less deep puddle? Got those too. Sniffed it all out earlier."

Oh my good god. The girl was an idiot. She was a Class A Idiot. He was tempted to bang his head against something right now, but there just wasn't anything convenient nearby to assist him with such a task. He was carefully monitoring this... thing... and having no luck at all. It only showed signs of intelligence in relation to mud. There was definitely something wrong with this one. Not that almost every kitsu had something 'wrong' with them. This one just seemed a whole lot specialer than most of them. Yup, undeniably special. So special he figures that if he didn't stop her now, she'd probably try to drag him into that disgusting muck.

It wasn't so much that he was a clean neat freak or anything of that sort. He just did not like the idea of rolling around in mud. Come on. How manly is that? Playing around and laughing? Not that he needed to prove his manliness in any way. No, no, of course not! What a silly and fickle thing to possibly think. Instead, he merely wanted all these fools to leave them all alone. The stupidity of the world was annoying and he grimaced at even the thought of it.

As she hopped up beside him, he curled his tails closer to his body and glared at her some more. Did she not understand when people didn't want her around? Was she really that dense? He sighed outwardly and flicked his tails in anger, swatting her paw away fiercely.
"Don't touch me," he snarled, showing two clean white rows of pointy sharp teeth. "I'd much rather watch you drown in the mud," he added pointedly, making sure he didn't give her his name. What right did she have to know it? If someone wanted his name, they'd have to damn well earn it!

Being of the foolish variety, but not yet unwitting enough to qualify as a monarch among serfs, Eve noted the nameless male's closed off body language just as her toe came into contact with his forelimb. The realization, had it come sooner, might have made her halt the gesture entirely... or it may have merely invited a more targeted approach. Unfortunately, the wrathful reaction broke the thought into irrevocable pieces as he lashed out for the perceived offense, the thick plating attached to his paw making it a touch more heavy-handed than was strictly necessary. She took the cuff he proffered solidly on the joint, wincing and unleashing a hurt yip even as she pulled back slightly, adorned ears lowering while her own demeanor changed to accommodate the violent act.

"M'sorry." She mumbled sincerely, shaking out the affected paw and glancing at the minor, lighter smear left behind on his armored leg. The cruel follow-up only made her huddle into herself, directing the dimmed suns of her gaze to warm some distant spot for a time while the preference was voiced. She didn't dare say she understood, since she clearly didn't, her smarting leg evidence enough of that. Maybe he was allergic to dirt? That was possible, but a little confusing considering everything in the woods was layered with the very same stuff. Water then? But his wings looked almost like they were made to weather such an element, similar to the side-wings on the fish she'd seen the time she'd very nearly drowned in the more plausible settings of a river.

So was it just her?

"You don't have to play." The murmur was feather soft and contrite, only drawing back to him when she could comfortably stare through her lashes, the last sentence she urged out nothing but a mew. "But you don't have to wish me drown'ded neither."

There was no guilt, nor pity, about his countenance. His sharp ruby red eyes were watching her with an acute viciousness not unknown to him. He had no love for foolish things or stupid creatures. They all died out sooner or later; what point was there in protecting the weak? It was a useless task only appointed to brave heroes, who, ironically enough, also got themselves killed. Now wasn't that a dandy penny for one's thoughts! The world was just a giant of cycle of death, and thankfully he wasn't exactly part of it. He tended to ignore and glare glassy daggers at most of the world, and so in that respect he remained safe from jeering glance and offhand comments.

But nothing could protect him from things like her. Either dense or oblivious, she simply didn't understand reason or truth, this enough was clear from the way she looked and acted. He wasn't sorry for wounding her, naturally it wasn't his fault. He wasn't sorry for wishing her 'drown'ded' either, as she so lovingly put it. Snarling and twitching, he rolled his eyes, curling his tails tighter again and flexing his wings just a bit. Bothersome little children should stay at home under the strict gaze of an unfortunate parent. Oh how he would rue the day that he became a parent. So much so that he knew it would be better to not let it happen. There was none truly worthy of his companionship anyway. Nobody stupid.

It didn't matter. He didn't truly care. Raising an eyebrow, her gave the fool a bit more attention, nearly spitting and hissing out his words like the most vile of creatures,
"Wish implies I give a damn. No. It was merely a thought. I think you'd do me a whole lot of good drowned. One less fool in the world." And with that, he gave her a kind of malicious grin that implied he really didn't give a flying kit's a** about her or what she said even. Such was the extent of selfish cruelty beneath the layer of satanic beauty.

The tone used was enough to lacerate, attempting to scrape off her hide with a dull instrument forged from haughty words and further tan it, so thoughtlessly unkind and uncalled for that she was lost on how to react. Eve didn't know this male, didn't know his name, his face, the nature of his fiercely brusque demeanor; it was all new and sudden, like the slap with claws behind it had been, like the way he looked at her - down his elongated snout, with eyes that wove cutting crimson threads around her tender heart and pulled taut - as though she didn't even deserve to be occupying space. The girl's mind reeled a little at the smile her peripheral vision caught an edge of, willing scattered wits to make something positive of it, to add a mislaid drop of honey to the acidic bath he'd dumped into the trench she had been trapped in almost since the conversation had started. It could have been a nice smile, if it had held less teeth. It could have been the only kind of smile he could maintain across a ruby and soot streaked face.

"Sorry..." She tried again, honestly no longer sure what atrocious act she had committed that required additional apology, only knowing that it had to be said to take some density out of the distaste she was wading through. The wet earth squelched noisily between her toes as she rebalanced the weight on her paws, trying to decide how to best remedy the situation. She was making him unhappy, or at least that was the case as far as she could tell, nothing else nearby to cause hostility. Unless mud counted, which she couldn't say it did. There was also, of course, no guarantee that he wasn't always grumpy, as was sometimes the root of the problem with others she had encountered. But the diminutive female was incapable of knowing for certain with only sparse sentences split between them, and she was hesitant to assume after she had already been struck once for guessing incorrectly.

"D'you want me to go?" The question was addressed to him plainly, the childish bearing still intact even after it had been bruised by aversion. It didn't occur to Eve that she could have asked him to leave, that she had been there first and therefore had a right to stay. If he was really so bothered, then she would give her best effort to ease it, even if it meant sacrificing her day of fun in the muck she'd come to adore.

Rolling his eyes in malcontent, he watched her with a heady viciousness that seemed to be a part of his very heart, soul, and core. In truth, it was. There were few, if any, good traits about him. Aside from his would-be dark and attractive looks, he never had much interesting in anyone aside from himself. Even now, he proved a terrible companion and not one for games or polite conversation. Why should he include himself in such stupid things? It didn't benefit him and he simply didn't want to.

Sorry? What? Now she was apologizing? What a worthless thing. He scoffed at her, hating the very sight of her. She was another one of those useless kits in the world. One of the ones that really just brought everything down. However, the more pathetic she looked, the more angry he got. Wasting energy on this... this... thing! She was just so disgusting and how could he even consider exerting effort on this pitiful thing? Mud covered muck. That's what she was. Sighing and twitching ever so slightly, he waved his paw,
"The only thing I want, is for you to leave me alone. You're wasting my time."

Not that he was doing anything anyway. But he was sure his time was valuable anyway. And he wanted to use it for himself, not this little ...creature.

There was nothing in his angry, belittling stare that she could misinterpret, especially after the eye-rolling, the annoyed avalanche of sighs and snarls, and the blatant appeals to injure herself. And then, there was always the ache in her wrist to confirm it, inflicted for trying too hard, and maybe even for being there at all. When he raised his paw again, Eve flinched back slightly, half-expecting another blow while her muddied bangs dripped ooze down her nose and made her shiver. It was getting cold again without activity to impede it, her wet clothes and fur not nearly enough layering to prevent the chill from seeping into her bones. But the second collision never came, the motion that lifted his foreleg into the air tied in to whatever it was he was saying.

When his words finally registered as affirmative, her face fell a little further, chattering jaws barely held in check as she nodded faintly to show she'd heard. "'Kay..." She absently poked at a stone that rolled to display a wet underside, her expression dismal. The urge to apologize again was quelled, however, her remorse already conveyed in the only way she knew. Instead, the small kitsusagi raised herself up onto all fours, favoring her front leg only a little as she backed up off the dry spot and returned to the damp bog-like arena, slogging through puddles that were starting to more closely resemble cake batter than anything little girls could play in.

She paused only once to glance back over her dirt-stiff shoulder, tails flicking as she considered the darkly shaded kitsusagi sitting stately and disinterested in everything around him. And then she was gone, loping awkwardly back toward the burrow she called home, trying to thwart the frosty sensation that came from mud spread over skin too long and treating with creatures that couldn't even pretend.
