For most, it is something to enjoy - or to change (**Turns on TV/Music**) - but generally means that all is okay.

But for parents...

Silence
usually means you are not where you should be. Sorry that you're late getting lunch ready!

How many parents have been busy doing something and realised that A: they haven't been disturbed in the last two minutes, and B: it is really, really quiet here... and ran from the room only to find a mess to be cleaned up
Probably easier to ask: "Who hasn't".

Anyway, share your stories?

The worst encounter with silence I've so far had was my daughter scribbling all over the tabletop instead of the paper. I know I'm really lucky.. For my parents, silence once found me in a storage room on the floor on the opposite side of the house from everyone else, cutting up a nice deck of cards with scissors I wasn't supposed to have, saying "Huh-huh-huh, g*d--d*mn--sh*t." over and over again. (I don't remember the consequences of that.. I'm not even sure there were any.. I just don't remember.. I also don't remember if I was actually caught in the act or not.. I THINK I was, but am not sure - I do remember that I never did it again.. it was out of my system after that.)

(On this note: when my daughter says swear words, I just ignore her... Oma tried the whole making a big deal out of it and telling her she shouldn't say them.. and it only made it so much more interesting for her.)

There was one other time when silence meant she was scratching the paint off the living room wall above the couch.. But I don't recall any horror stories like covering the floor in peanut butter or something. My daughter is, so far, all in all, pretty tame. We'll see were we're at in a year.

YES!

I've had that happen too! My oldest was scratching the coffee table - he tried to blame it on his 2 1/2 year old brother - but as the word 'CAT' had been scratched in it WE DIDN'T BUY IT!

My youngest was cutting her waist length hair off! (ended up about chin length)

As for me - once my older brother talked me into walking over to our nearest neighbors - WITHOUT telling out parents first! This would probably be no big deal if your neighbors right next door, but ours was 2 MILES away!

Needless to say, we were in .... pretty deep!

Another incident came to mind today -

My then 5 year old and 3 year old boys were being unusually quiet playing in our yard. I went out and called for them, they were nowhere in sight! Then I heard a voice giggle from VERY HIGH UP!

They had climbed our large white spruce tree and were up higher than our 2-story house's roof! I tried not to panic, and figured if they could get up there they could come down. They came down slowly, and SAFELY. The next day my husband cut off all the low branches they could reach, so they couldn't do it again!

ohhh i would freak! i'd be calling the fire dept or something lol normally when my kids are quiet it means they are coloring on the walls or when they younger, unrolling the toilet paper all over the floor.

the other day, while i was in the shower, my husband 'lost' our 3 yr old daughter. he could heare her calling him but didn't know where she was. for some weird reason he didn't think to look in the master bathroom. rolleyes he was freaking out!

That's Funny! I always have thought men can't find anything that's not directly in front of their noses!

Silence is rare in my world with a toddler, 3 cats, and a dog. If I can't hear any of them, I know what I will find is bad.

For instance, yesterday, I was going to the bathroom and I could hear the cats play fighting and my son telling them to knock it off. Then nothing... When I came out the contents of my purse was all over the floor in the living room. The freshly folded laundry was knocked down and messed up. In the kitchen, the refridgerator was open, with the package of strawberries open and on the floor. A yogurt was open and all over the floor. The milk was on the floor, still closed. Thank God. The dogs food was dumped into his water. The cats' food was tipped over (don't know if I can blame the kid for that one though. It was pretty high up). It was a huge mess for me being out of eyesight for maybe 3 minutes.

However my son was nowhere to be found. He was in my office typing away on the computer mumbling to himself. Then very loudly he exclaimed "Idiots!" Apparently he was pretending to be me working. (I talk to myself alot while I'm working.)

Another time when things were too quiet.....

My then 2 1/2 year old daughter was discovered quietly coloring - HERSELF! She had found a blue PERMANENT marker and colored everything inch of herself she could reach! She looked like a smurf! She'd also colored on some pillows and sheets in her room - at least nothing was irreplaceable - and we did EVENTUALLY get her back to her normal coloring - though it did take a few baths and a few days!
