So I was jamming with this drummer today, and after we played a few improve rythmns he said "your really good at finding the pocket" and I was like "what pocket?" and he said, "you know, the groove" and I was like "I don't even know what that is man" and he was terrible at explaining it

So what is it?

It is a little hard to explain, but I've always interpreted it as staying completely locked in with your drummer, without straying at all, everything you play is in support of the song. Some great pocket players, Tim Commerford - RATM, Duck Dunn - Blues Brothers; session man, Stefan Lessard - DMB, Justin Mendel Johnson - Beck, Pino Palladino - John Mayer; session man, Juan Alderete - The Mars Volta; session man, Nathan East - session man, etc..

The pocket, or groove is the feel of music. It's hard to explain because it can't be explained as anything other than the feeling that the rhythm section creates.

Ok... A step in the right direction. but like how do you know when to hit? like do you pay attention to the bass drum? the snare? high hat?

how do you respond to the drummer that creates the pocket?

I know, im a terrible bass player. Ive been playing for four years, and I havent had any lessions.

theres not a certain point where u hit the pocket(groove)of a song its something that just comes naturally with the whole feel of the song just play and ull be able to tell if it fits and it sounds right then uve found the pocket

Hmm.. I think I kina understand.

correct me if im wrong

The pocket/groove, is the connection between the bass and drummer. if the pocket is strong, then the bass and drummers musical thoughts are aligned, they're playing speed, hits, and prodds line up exactly. the bass and drummer have a certain pace that they set through rythmn (whole notes half notes ect.) that complement each other. It's also important for the bass player to keep the constant rythmn, I noticed in jazz music, the walking bass line is just quarter notes, And jazz grooves (at least i think). the bass player should keep syncopation to a minimum.

Is that kinda close?

You're right about walking bass being in quarter notes. But in jazz there's a hi-hat beat always going to swing the beat, you accent certain quarter notes in relation to that hi hat beat, usually on 2 and 4... that's also the best way to count jazz because you get the swing feel when you count the 2nd and 4th beats. You really need to lock with a jazz drummer though because the groove may lay on the hi-hat but you need to sync up with the little snare flourishes and bass drum kicks.

Right, of course, I know in hard bop and cool jazz, The bass and drum will make certain punches with the snare and bass drum. and of course those prods are thought out before hand. ok.

hmm....Interesting, But what about everything else I said?

You're pretty much right on the money man. Being in the pocket is just one of those things you either get, or don't. My old drummer I could lock in with without thinking about it, we were in synch constantly. My current drummer I've been playing with much longer. But he's a completely different style and it takes some work to hit the pocket with him.

All I can say is, when you hit the pocket, you'll know it. Everything will sound great, you'll accent the drummer and vice-versa. It's not something you really think about, just something that should be instinct.

You know what, I think I knew that all along, I'm just one of those people that has to define and analyze everything. But its just your lock with the drummer.

Thanks Alot Guys! I owe you all.

Yes. Even though it seems like you already understand it.

The Pocket - (n.) The groove of music; rhythm.

Finding The Pocket - (v.) Being able to fall into perfect rhythm without having to really think about it.
