So. Last week the guy I used to work with (Sam) called me and offered me a job with his company he started recently. It will be all graphic design, helping him out with all the projects they have. I really want it, but there are a lot of things to consider. I have been at this job for a year, and don't really see myself going anywhere within the company. There are no opportunities to advance.

It would mean that I need to quit my job I have now. I've never quit a job, and am nervous to do that. Plus, the people at my company don't really get along with his company since there were some issues about the program he wrote and what happened to it when he left. Suffice it to say, there have been lawyers involved and a couple threats to sue. So I can't really say, I'm going to work for Sam! It would just be awkward. I know I don't necessarily have to say where I'm going, I can just say that I've been offered a new opportunity or something. Usually when people leave from my company they have talked about it with someone and they know what's going on....

There are quite a few risks. There would be a slight increase in pay, but there aren't benefits since they have just recently gotten off the ground. Not something I need dearly right now, but you never know. I can get insurance.... its just not as good as what I have now. I need to look over what I have now and compare it to an individual plan. Its never a sure bet whether they will be able to stay in business for a long period of time either, and then I wouldn't have any job.

I am not very happy with my job right now, its boring and repetitive and I've stopped learning new things and its just not where I want to be. This new job would be among people more my age and with the same interests, doing what I love to do (design and programming) and according to Sam, they are more of a team than any of the departments we have at my company now.

The new job would be in a company that does print and web marketing for real estate agencies (and other people too) and then has some potential to do some interactive training simulations and stuff like that.

Pros of staying with my company now:
-stability, guaranteed to be in business for awhile
-benefits
-close to where I live

Cons of staying:
-boring, not enjoyable
-not cohesive, they are more focused on profit than the people who help them get there

Pros of the new company:
-doing what I love with people who understand what I do and whom I can collaborate with
-fun and exciting
-endless potential
-numerous possible clients, have a couple already

Cons of the new company:
-not guaranteed that they will be in business for any length of time
-no benefits, pay doesn't make up for that
-about 30 minute drive from where I live

So what do you think? Is it too much of a risk? confused My dad suggested that I talk with my boss about possible advancement opportunities, but that might just give them the chance to... I don't know, do something bad. I don't know. razz !

I also have to decide about this very soon. Like by the end of the week. eek

Quit your job.

About advancing in your current company.. managers DO want to let the employee talk to them about advancing and stuff. You should talk to your boss about what they're planning to do, etc. Hopefully your boss will be straightfoward with you. Regardless, though, you say you're unhappy with your job.. that's a bad thing. Having a boring and repetative job is a surefire way to general unhappiness, even IF you like your coworkers(which doesn't really sound like it). In short, you NEVER want to be in a job you don't like if you can help it. That combined with your companies' current apathy about its employees in general and, more importantly, YOU is a recipe for disaster in terms of life fulfillment and such.

Don't be too nervous about quitting your job. I've done it before(although that was for medical reasons) and it's not really that hard. Oh, and feel free to cite a BS general reason for leaving, like not finding the job fulfilling enough.. or life situation.. or whatever. Or you could say you got a better offer from another company. I wouldn't. sweatdrop

As for the new company.. it's true that lots of companies fail, and sometimes you can't do anything about it. But.. well, I would take the chance. sweatdrop I can't tell you anything about the current graphic design industry, but I think you can get hired pretty easily nowadays.

Again, talk to your company employer before sending in your two week notice. Use your judgement on this one.. if you feel their response is BS "please stay with us and we'll promote you we promise" then I wouldn't stay. If you think their response is honest, then you may want to think twice about quitting. In the end, it's up to you, but that's my two cents. sweatdrop

You know, this really is a great opportunity. One I cannot justify passing up. So I''m going for it.

I just have to quit. I wouldn''t be afraid to talk to my boss if it wasn''t for the legal mess the two companies were/are in.

Phew. This is going to be interesting. A rough next couple days, I expect.

When I dread going to work because I know its going to feel like the day is taking forever and I just don''t want any one to call me.... I think that''s when you know you should find something else. And that something else found me.... so I''m lucky.

Well, I quit my job and I started my new job. It was easier than I thought to quit, of course, but then the process of training the new guy they hired a couple days after I told them I was leaving was a hard process. Wore me out and I was a zombie at my new job, but that's OK. They're totally cool and the first two days were so easy. Next week I'll get caught up in all the projects they have, and I'll be busy!! I'll post more about it soon, I'm pretty worn out still.

Wow! Thanks for all the support everyone!

At my new job I've been working on templates for the business card ROMs we do. So I've been working on developing color schemes, incorporating textures and images, and choosing fonts.

I've been at home for almost a week though, because I got my wisdom teeth taken out, and I'm still hurting from it! razz ! Hopefully I can go back to work tomorrow.
