Ever since I got 'The book of General Ignorance' nothing about history really surprises me anymore xD
I have one right here:
The steam engine was actually first invented in 62 AD by someone named Heron who was from Egypt. He invented something called the 'wind ball’, which was a steam-driven metal sphere that spun round at 1,500 rpm.
Unfortunately, nobody was able to see the practical use for it, so it was just considered as an amusing novelty.
At that time the railway had already been invented, so if Heron had the idea to combine the 2, history would probably be very different.
Also, at the back of my book it says 'Everything you think you know is wrong' :3
