First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Choire and it has fallen to me to teach you little scamps how to Role Play. I’ve been on gaia for quite a long time, and have been RPing since day one.

In the real world, I'm a college student from the states living in Japan for a year. I like to be on gaia in my free time. It is second however, to art, drinking with friends (drinking is all there is to do around here), shopping, books, movies, and much much more. How I manage to sepnd so much time on here and still do that is beyond me.

I'm the first moderator to get to this forum, so you may see other introductions later, or this may be moved.

I like helping the newbies who want to learn how to do it right, so you have gained my favor just by being here. If you need anything RP, or otherwise, you may feel free to PM me. I’d be glad to help you.

If you find that you enjoy RPing and would like to find a guild or forum to continue practicing in, I’d be glad to make some suggestions, or help you look for a place.

The next few posts will cover a wide range of topics. Almost anything you would ever want to know about Role Playing is all right here.

I tried to lay this out so you can look in as little or as much detail as you’re comfortable with. If I miseed something, let me know and I’ll add it.

RP: Role Play (easy enough)
RPG: Role Playing Game. These are more involeved than most RPs. They tend to have room for advancement of the character, and the story is usually thought out ahead of time by the creator.
OOC: out of character
Username: The name you sign in with
Charry/Charries: Short for Character(s)
Cannan: A known character from a pre-existing story line. For example, Harry from Harry Potter would be a cannon
Bio: Biography or back story of a character
Mary Jane: This refers to a profile, usually the bio. It means that the story is sort of cliché, or humdrum, its best to be originalviii.
Mod: Short for moderator, not the same as God Modding. Listen to mods.
(God) Modding: a character is too powerful, or doesn’t allow other characters to react to their actions. People hate this, and it’s been known to get people kicked out of RPs. Even the creator shouldn’t god mod, it’s just not fair.
Avi: short for avatar. Not really related, but sometimes its brought up, so you should know about it.
NPC: Non-playable Character. These are charries that nobody is actually controlling. Sometimes they are used to allow your charry to talk to someone unimportant. Somtimes the chreator will add them to move the story.
Lit: Literate, some elitist gaians will tell you that this means writing several paragraphs per post. Most of us consider a person lit if they use proper grammar and spelling, and post more than a few word in a post.
Semi-lit: Semi-literate, this is the same as lit, but occasionally chat jargin gets slipped in there, things like bff, l8er, u r, etc.
Siggy: Signature, at the bottom of posts PMs.

Profiles diver based on the story or background of the role play. A general profile should include at least the following.
1. Username
2. Character name
3. Description of appearance, or picture (Sometimes the RP creator has a preference, check that first.) This can be as detailed as you like.
4. Bio

Here is a sample profile
1. Username: Choire
2. Character Name: Jane Doe
3. Description: Jane is about 5” 4’ with blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears black most of the time.
4. Bio: Jane has worked for the government as a spy for an undetermined amount of time. She has no known relations, and no documented life history. This bio is a little mary janish, but you get the point. I used something similar to this for a James Bond RP a long time ago)

Some profiles may include extras
1. Powers/abilities/attributes are common to see in fantasy RPs
2. Personality is sometimes in there, by preference of the creator
3. Occupation
4. Relationship Status, usually reserved for romance RPs
5. Stats/level/etc. These are usually reserved for the more intense Rps or RPGs, they work more like pen and paper games. Personally, I think they’re a little too involve, when I could just buy a video game that does it all for me. But everyone has preferences.

How To

These are generally accepted guidelines for how the post is actually done.

______Post in third person. Use he/she, instead of I. Its more like telling about the character than actually being them.
______Post verbal communitcation in quotes.
______You can post things the chracter thinks, just make sure to indicate that it is a thought. Some people switch to italics, some use quotes, some just say "he though..... "
______Post things about the character as you tell what's happening. If its important, make a note of it.
A sample is below.

jane doe
Jane walked into the back office and sat at her clutterred desk. She rifled through some papers and found the file she wanted and turned to Marcus.

"Run a background on this and let me know if anything pops up."

He agreed to let her know as soon as possible (Marcus was an NPC, so I'm allowed to determine his actions) She kicked her heels up on the desk, pulled of her sunglasses, and rubbed her eyes. Tonightwas going to be a long one.......

Etiquette

These are some generally accepted standards of roleplaying, especially here at Gaia online.

______ God modding is a terrible no no. God Modding is an action where you basically don't allow the other character to fight back or post for themselves. Something like "he slammed his sword down and knocked out XX". You can fight, but must always give the other character a chance to react or fight back.
______ Literacy is the best option for role play, save semi-literacy for chatting.
______ Don’t make OOC comments, unless the creator has a method for it. For example, some people will tell you to use double parenthesis ((like this)). Occasionally it is necessary to make OOC coments to clear up points you may not understand. Most of the time there is a separate OOC forum.
______ Abide any rules specific to the RP.

Some Other Tips

Try to be as descriptive as possible. Everyone has different imaginations, so they may see things differently, and that’s ok. But if you want someone to understand exactly what’s happening, or what something looks like, thell them. Things like the layout of a room, that geography of an area of land, the size of a boat, etc. are all important to know. In a snese, you’re imagining for them, so you have to let them know all the details. You could be less descriptive, but it may cause confusion
Advertise. No one will join an RP they don’t know exists. Most RPs that aren’t in guilds are in Barton Town, so they move to the tope of the page when you post. But you may want to put a link in your siggy and post in other forums, just so as many people as possible hear about it.
Don’t stress too much. Don’t worry about occasionally misspelling, or forgetting a coma. This is supposed to be fun, and most people are not the critical about it. We all do it, you’ve probably noticed something in my posts that I missed, and it’s no big deal.
Occasionally, outside of role plays, an action will be posted in some kind of bracket. For example *sits down* This isn't really RPing, its just a way of expressing things outside of the actually conversation.

In case you're interested.

Story/setting: The first thing you want to do is to set up a place for the RP to happen. Some RPs are open ended, so there isn’t really a story line, but you at least want to describe the actual location. Remember this is a world of your making, so you have to let people know anything you think is important.

Rules: some RPs include their own rules besides those of the guild/forum they’re located in. These may be simple, like “Don’t post OOC.” Or they could be more complex, it’s all what the creator wants to have happen.

Profiles: It’s best if you keep all the profiles in one place. It’s pretty universal to have them PMed to the creator, and theat person will put them in one post near the top of the page.

Monitoring: It’s important to watch an RP that you’ve created, try to read every post. Besides the fact that you should be active in your own RP, this makes sure that others aren’t god modding, altering the direction of the story, or doing something else that you don’t like. If you created it, you’re in charge.

If you read all that two things.

1. GOOD JOB! It was boring to write, I'm sure it wasn't much more thrilling to poor thourgh. *gives you a cooke and pats you on the head*

2. You are offically ready to begin Role Playing. There is an apartment complex set up the you can stretch your fledgling muscles in. Good luck and have a good time.
