Sooo...who got first part?
  Me! Me!
  Not me.
We don't have first or second part. (Probably more of a flute/other instruments option...)

So, we just got the music for our opener yesterday at mini-camp...it's awesome. And I was surprised, because I got 1st saxophone- as far as I can tell, I'm one of the only freshmen to get a 1st part. I'm on first with three other girls from my section (the other freshmen is on second). I'm really happy I got first, though. :] It's a fun part. (I didn't expect to get it, though, since my friend told me that I'd probably get 2nd, and that most freshmen get 2nd.)

How often does a freshmen get first part? I don't know if I'm special or something, because I already memorized our exercises and can play them well (honestly, that was all on accident...I never practice xd ).

Uhh...discuss?

I only had first on like, 1 or 2 marching songs last year, but once we got into concert band, I was 4th chair trumpet, and they way or BD does it is 1st chair=1st trumpet, 1st part; 2nd chair=1st trumpet-second part; 3rd chair=1st chair-third part, that way all the talent gets distributed evenly and you dont just hear the first part because all the good players are playing it
so I was 2nd trumpet-1st part, but then I was moved up to second chair
and now I think I may just get section leader/1st chair this year
^.^

I'm the only oboe, so I usually have the only oboe part or I get some type of flute...I hate the flute parts because they're so high!!! I like the lower notes because they sound better and are easier to play.

=D Haha!
I always got first parts as a Freshman because our upper class sucked.

I made section leader this year so I'm pretty much in control of the flute section. And since I'm 4th chair in first band we always get first part for marching shows and play the upper parts.
Our Freshman class could easily outplay the rest of the band last year, by our Senior year we're going to Nationals.

It's not necessarily becuase you're better than the upperclassmen (though that could be the case). In upper level bands where most or all of the section is capable, it's not uncommon for directors to split the top players and put at least one great player on each part. This is becuase composers for student bands may write parts so that the first part is harder than the third but most pieces of music are written so that all parts are important and support each other, combining to make the whole section part sound good. It goes back to the pyramid balance - having the best musicians on first and neglecting the second and third parts makes the pyramid upside down and the section's balance isn't as good. Even if you have twice as many people on third, if they can't play it all or don't play it out as much as a single first player, that part doesn't get heard as much as it should be to balance the main melody with the harmony parts.

Ahh, okeydokey. I just thought it was a little weird since none of the other freshmen have it...We do have equal first and second parts, though. Four on first, and four on second. That's probably it.

I got 1st part freshman and sophmore year.
The seniors in flute section were so pissed because I was a freshman that played way better than them lol.

But are previous BD wasn't to wise about the balancing of talent...so you were lucky if you heard the other parts in a section lol.

my freshman year... we didn't base chair placements on talent or ability to play... it was on seniority

Some of our Freshman get first part. It depends on the instrument. We usually go by our chairs from the previous year. Then if we need the parts to balance it we put upperclassman on first part first but if we need more and run out of upperclassmen we stick Freshman on first. I was the only Freshman piccolo/flute player the year I came up and I memorized first and second flute parts that way I could play the first part if it was necessary.

My friend Jeremy got 1st trumpet part. He is a great player and also a squealer. Heh, he got first mainly because they like people taking it up an octave. So it's him and four upperclassmen on first part.
