Chao-shi sank back into the suprisingly soft bed of his rented room. He'd been lucky enough to find one, most had been booked in advance because of the festival. The old woman he'd rented it from had been nice enough, but Chao wished he would have been able to get a nicer room.
Slowly, he pulled out his coin pouch from where it had been tucked safely in his sash. It was heavy and jingled with all sorts of coins and other payments. He dumped it out onto the bed and spread out all of the pieces. A few different shaped gold coins from different provinces, and the typical standard coin pieces that were accepted everywhere. A ring from an old lady who had no other way to pay.
Chao had felt bad for taking it, but the old lady insisted to pay him somehow. It looked fairly old, set with some sort of family insignia in obsidian. It was pretty, and fit well on chao's middle finger. He slipped it on and kept it there- it was a good addition to his other jewelry, especially the new pieces he'd gotten today.
As far as the gold count, however, the young man had made out pretty well. It was still a little heady being able to keep it all for himself, without the caravan manager taking 90% of it. It was enough money to keep him completely sustained for at least a week and then some.
Picking up his rucksack, Chao-shi tucked away most of the gold into a medium puzzle box. He'd gotten it from a little blacksmith a while ago. The box was rather handsome, a dark painted wood with swirls burned into it. The only way it could be unlocked was by pressing several buttons in a particular order. It was a very secure way of keeping valuables.

After that was done, he stretched out once more and removed his boots and cape. Lazily he grabbed a small bag next to his bed and fished out his new cloths. He hadnt planned on buying anything new... but what he had found was too good to pass up. Even if it was expensive... it was perfect.
The short vest he had bought was black with red trim. It had a higher collar, and was fastened with little white clasps. it ended at his shoulders, and only came down to the middle of his ribs. The undershirt he'd boughten was a nice white fabric that felt like silk. It was longsleeved, but he figured if it got hot he'd just go without. The sash was a red silk, and he'd found pants much like the ones he was already wearing, but in black instead.
Chao-shi had been sad to give up his old boots. They'd lasted him a long time, and been with him over several continents. But the boots had given out last week, a large seem tore at the heel, rendering them un-wearable.
It was going to be rough for the next couple of days to break in the new leather boots, but they were of good quality and would last hopefully as long as his old ones had. The red leather was beautiful too.
Chao had picked up a few pieces of jewelry as well, but they were mainly show pieces in all honesty, or a few little trinkets picked up here and there to give to any pretty girls that he met.

Putting his new clothes and his bag back on the floor, Chao rolled over onto his back and looked up at the ceiling. Pretty girls... the young fortune teller was reminded of the delicate but fiery girl he'd met in the Ba Sing Se earlier.
He was also reminded of his mother. He knew it sounded cheesy, but he closed the lids over his green eyes and thought about her. Both of his parents had died when he was fairly young, and Chao-shi didnt remember much from that event besides fire.
The young mans face frowned. It was becoming harder and harder to remember his mothers face. The boy had kept a poster of his parents that had been put up when they had their special double act together. It was one of the only pieces that remained of them... the other few being a ceremonial mask and a cloak clasp of his fathers, and his mothers tarot and ornate set of bones used for special readings. Those had been passed down the line of fortune tellers, and Chao had to fight tooth and nail to keep them away from the caravan master who'd tried to sell them. The old bat was such a witch.
Shaking thoughts of her from his mind, he settled in and pulled the blanket over him, shutting out the world for a few hours before his next big performance.
