To start, what's an emotion?
Don't give me a dictionary definition, now. I know it's scientifically classified as a bunch of chemicals in the brain that react to stress of different kinds. And don't say it's that feeling you get sometimes when something happens. Use your own words, no matter how abstract it gets. Actually, the more confusing, the better ^^
Where do your emotions change from calm to something a bit more extreme?
I personally have issues with feeling emotions, so I'm really curious about this one. What causes you to suddenly get depressed, then hop to a gleeful smile, and downright furious some time later, etc? It doesn't have to be as extreme as bipolar disorders; maybe a sudden quickening of pulse as you look at a boy at your school, even.
And why did you think that certain people feel emotions that are different than others?
Such as the time my friends and I were at a party with a really loud set of speakers blaring out pop and rock and I left with hands over my ears while everyone else was dancing the night away. Or when watching a news segment about 9/11, one person starts bawling his/her head off while the neighbor sits without a twitch.

To me, emotion is like a window to your inner self. While you may be able to hide it, if you show it a lot, it says a lot about you.

For me, it's a pretty awesome way of telling people who you are.
It's also a great way to get to know people.
I've always been captivated by the way that you could easily change the people around you by changing yourself. Because they have emotional responses to the emotions that you, yourself, display.
Emotions are a way to get to know people and to help them. They're also a way to manipulate people, if you want to call it that. Emotions are how we learn to interact with one another. If that makes sense... sweatdrop

To me, emotions are your way of experiencing things going on in your life. How you process and deal with things that go on in your daily life. That how I see it anyway.
