We have tryouts at the start of summer before our Junior year (so that the new drum major has a whole year of watching the current drum major to become prepared for their senior year).

So yeah, I went for it. I honestly didn't care whether or not I "won". I just kinda wanted to learn how to direct and how to salute and stuff.
So no, I didn't get it. This guy got it, and we were all happy for him because he actually deserved it.

Anyway, before the actual tryouts, we all got together 3 times a week with the new drum major and she taught us everything we needed to do for the tryouts. We called this Drum Major Club (DMC).

There were 8 of us who tried out, which was the most we've had in a long time, our director said. All of us loved hanging out and we goofed off so much, and we all made a truce that we wouldn't hate each other after we found out who won.

The tryouts reminded me of American Idol, how you walk into a room with 3 judges sitting at a table. We had to direct 3 different patterns to different tempos, show our salute, a few calls, march, and direct a piece of music that we're doing this fall.

And when you were done and walked into the room where everyone else was waiting, they cheered for you.

We entertained ourselves while waiting for our turn to tryout by playing Wii and Twister. Haha. It was so much fun.

I loved DMC!

Wow. Your Drum Major tryouts look fun. Ours are...a tad bit different.

Are you trying out for Drum Major? Yep!
What do you have to do to tryout? As I said before. Our tryouts are way different. We don't get a year to practice...we get about two weeks. This is how it goes. First, our director posts tryout information. We get that huge stack of papers and fill out essay questions, personality questions, how to handle a bad student questions, etc. Then we turn those in. The Director makes the first cut. If you did a good job answering the questions, you get to try out. Now, after this, auditions are held two weeks from that day. We can only practice by ourselves or with a director. Not a previous drum major. Then two weeks later, we try out, have an interview, and the person with the best score wins.

How many people are trying out? 3
Do you have a Drum Major Club? Nope. But I wish.
Did you "win" tryouts? YES! I AM HEAD DRUM MAJOR FOR 08' Baby! WOOT! blaugh

Yeah, I tried out and won. Been DM since my jr. year. We were tested on our skills in field conducting, parade routines, and drill downs. It's all good.

Wow, our DM tryouts are a lot different. Firstly, we have three Drum Majors, a Sophmore, a Junior, and the Head DM- a senior.

Usually you try out at the end of Freshman year to become Soph DM, though we had a couple of Sophmores try out this year.

For ours, our three DMs will hold after school lessons out behind the band room for those trying out. After a couple weeks, we hold tryouts.

1st- Directing the band while marching. This includes some halts, narrow-ups, and faces. (right, left, about face)

2nd- Directing Star Spangled Banner (harder than it sounds)

3rd- Directing a pep band song of your choice.

We had, like 15 people try out this year. It took FOREVER to get all the marching tests done.

Are you trying out for Drum Major? Yes, I tried out this year and will try out for the next two years.
What do you have to do to tryout? We had to write an essay basically stating why we would be such a great choice for Drum Major.
How many people are trying out? My first tryout, 10 including myself.
Do you have a Drum Major Club? Um... I don't believe so. If we do, I don't know about it.
Did you "win" tryouts? 'Win'? Yes. I was very excited since I was the second sophomore in my school to ever get the DM title.

Are you trying out for Drum Major? Nah; I like my trumpet to much

What do you have to do to tryout?
Well; we have to learn all the whistle calls, and how to conduct

then you have to direct the band as if you're in a parade *we dont actually march tho*
You call the band to parade rest; attention; fight song; alma mater; star spangled banner and then back to parade rest
and you're judged on how well you did everything; how calm and involved you were
and how well you were respected by the actual band

I also forgot to put that you have to be able to conduct a score, call commands on the other people trying out, and answer an oral question.

Are you trying out for Drum Major?
I sure did. =]

What do you have to do to tryout?
First we had to receive a petition from our band director which made us ask for five band members' signatures saying they would think we would be good for our applied position. Once we filled that out, we turned it in to receive an application, which was filled with a packet of readings on leadership and a bunch of free-response questions based on the reading material. We had about a month to complete it and turn it back in, along with getting a grade check and handing out two letters of recommendation to other teachers. We also had to attend a meeting if we were trying out for ANY leadership position (DMs, section leaders, etc).
The drum major applicants had to attend a conducting clinic after school, and the following week we had to conduct and rehearse the opener for our top concert group for ten minutes.

How many people are trying out?
Twelve people overall tried out for a drum major position.

Do you have a Drum Major Club?
Haha, not really. But we all goofed around and waited for our try-outs; we were all so nervous!

Did you "win" tryouts?
Yes! Our marching band has three drum major positions: one head drum major and two assistant drum majors, so I got one of the assistant positions.
It's a new experience though, since I'm the second person in our school to get a drum major position as a sophomore, and the other two drum majors are both senior guys, haha.

Are you trying out for Drum Major?
I did.

What do you have to do to tryout?
1. An extra hour of classes during leadership week.
2. Calling commands and teaching someone how to perform the commands like they are a new student.
3. Performing commands while someone else calls them.
4. Conducting the required piece as a group
5. Presenting your salute.
6. Conducting the required piece solo for the 4 judges and all others trying out.
7. Conducting the piece you chose.
8. Going through an interview where they ask some very odd questions.

How many people are trying out?
13

Do you have a Drum Major Club?
No

Did you "win" tryouts?
I didn't win it. However, I am friends with 3 of the 4 people that did and I am a leader within my section. One of my friends has been drum major for two years now. If my directors believed in head drum majors, he would be it. It is funny though, because one of my friends is the last one announced and they are announced in alphabetical order. He mad the comment that it is funny to be the last one announced when your last name begins with L.

You all are lucky. Our DM tryouts aren't even tryouts because NO ONE wants to be DM.
Our director is sort of like, "Who wants to be a DM? biggrin "

Eh... I'm the DM of my band two years running, but it's no biggy. I'm a junior this year. Theres only less-than-20 of us in the band this year, and I'm doubting we're even marching.

But I'm in Hawaii All-State Marching Band, so I'm quite content. Hooray for All-State Band! biggrin
