I think all relationship should have a symbiotic feel to them. Both people in the relationship should "get something" out of it. So what do you propose these two would get out of their relationship with each other.
Things to discuss:
- - What Sasuke can give to Hinata.
- - What Hianta can give to Sasuke.
- - What (another character) could give to Hinata that Sasuke couldn't.
- - What (another character) could give to Sasuke that Hinata couldn't.
- - Any other relevant subject you can think of.

Sasuke could protect Hinata, and if he truly loved her, give her confidence in herself by showing her how he feels.
Hinata could just give him some honest love, and trust and kindness. Make him feel better and happy in the midst of all his tragedies.
Another character could probably better give Hinata kindness all the time. I am not saying Sasuke wouldn't be nice, but I am sure that he would take some practice with that, and it wouldn't be quite as openly kind perhaps.
Another character could perhaps give Sasuke... I don't know... a more independent relationship? How to explain... well, Hinata would perhaps rely on him a lot more, what with his possibly boosting her confidence. She'd need him around a lot (not that he'd mind). Maybe another character who is more confident herself could more easily let them have a less reliant and more spaced out relationship. However, I personally enjoy the closeness Sasuke and Hinata could experience.

I actually would say the total opposite to that. Rather than Sasuke just protecting her, I would hope he would give her strength. You know? My OTP is SasuSaku, but I hate that anything you ever read thats SasuSaku, or SasuANYONE he's all sweet. In the pictures you find of Sasuke with a girl he's always being sweet. Sasuke is not a sweet guy. I always saw him as a tough love kind of guy. I think even for Hinata Sasuke would have to be something she'd have to work for. And I hate the concept of people changing themselves for other people, but I think Hinata would change for Sasuke for the better. I think she could be stronger after being with him, more assertive. She'd actually have a backbone. I love Hinata, her signature is her timid behavior, but I would love to see a change in that if it meant Sasuke bringing it out. You know?
I don't think that another character would be nicer than her, really. I think they would baby her like everyone has her whole life. Hinata is like a delicate flower, but no more than Sakura or Ino. You know? She's perfectly capable of being strong like them. I think the only other character I would like to see with Hinata is Kiba. I think he would also give her a back bone. Just not in the same manor that Sasuke could. I think Kiba would more encourage her to be brave, than force her. Sasuke is more demanding. Of course, maybe he's into wimps. lol No offense, I love Hinata and all, but she's totally a wimp.
I think Hinata would be a refreshing break for Sasuke. On this part I do agree with you Hiei. <3 I think no matter how strong she may get, she'd always be sweet to Sasuke. He really deserves her in the department. I don't think any other character could be soft enough for Sasuke better than Hinata. She's just so gentle and I think she would be patient with him. She'd be able to take him when he was being an a*****e. She totally put up with Neji. lol She can deal with Sasuke.
