Idhril was one of those children who was a little bit good at everything but not particularly good at any one thing. She could learn the basics of almost anything she cared to try her hand at - art, music, dancing, reading, writing, lessons - but the only thing she knew very well was languages ... though it could be argued that that was because she had been born speaking three different languages. But now she had something that she wanted to become very good at - excellent at, in fact - and she was stopping at the library after school to do some research on the subject.
She had been working at it for a while now, but she had hit a roadblock ... a big one. And she needed help.
Considering that her father was the head librarian, the question of whom to ask for help was not a difficult one - and so it was that she was heading to his office, book tucked under her arm, one finger inside to mark her page. She didn't even hesitate when she got there, but knocked solidly on his door three times.
Lore paused for a moment in what he was doing (which invovled writing something out by hand). He wondered what on earth could someone be coming here for, and wondered if there was an appointment he forgot. Which wasn't likely, sure, he may have the habits of a stereotypical scholar but he wasn't absentminded thank you very much.
"Come in," he called out.
Idhril reached out and turned the doorknob, pushing the door open slightly and poking her head into Lore's office.
"Papa?" she asked softly. "Are you busy?"
Well obviously he was, but what she meant was, do you have a moment?
Lore smiled softly as he put his writing tools and papers out of the way so they would not get knocked over or ruined. It was always a joy to have one of the children come over to the library (since he couldn't seem, at least in his eyes to spend enough time with them).
"For you, no," Lore replied, "Come in, do you need help with something?"
They were nearing the end of the school term after all.

Idhril smiled brightly and stepped into the room, closing the door behind herself and moving to sit in the chair across the desk from Lore.
"I'm doing some research," she explained, making herself comfortable, "so that I can ... wait, did Mama tell you all about Joruri?"
She blinked innocently at her father. After all, what she wanted to ask him wouldn't make much sense if he didn't already know about the strange Second that she had taken under her wing.
"I think...." Lore murmured, "She had mentioned your friend in passing."
Though he didn't know a lot about it, only that this was the reason why Idhril had disappeared for so long. Which had worried more people than probably it would normally have if she hadn't been so young and if the family hadn't already gone through two other disappearances with interesting results.
Idhril nodded thoughtfully. "Well ... he's really hurt in a lot of places," she explained, "and Mama tried to heal him but she couldn't ... Joruri says that since I'm his mistress, only I can heal him ... so I have to know how, so I'm here to learn how I can do that. So I was looking at this book ..."
And she set the book on the desk, face up. It was titled "Human Anatomy for Beginners".
"... so that I could know a bit what I'm doing when I try to help him."
She opened it to the page she was on and flattened the pages, then pointed at some of the diagrams. "And here it shows what makes a boy different from a girl, and I was wondering, why are boys and girls different like that?"
Lore coughed a bit looking at that and wondered if Idhril had seen the other picture that showed the insides as well. She might have, though that wouldn't have explained the... reproduction of majority of Gaians.
"Well...." Lore eyed Idhril for a moment thinking this through, "They are different because they have to be to have children... you remember about natural babies right? Well a woman is different because she has to be able to grow the baby in her stomach and the man is different to help the woman have the baby."
And let's just leave it at that, she was far too young in the technical details of that, which the last time he had heard Seconds were quite capable of carrying out the act, just not anything after that.
He thought... that was a good question... he shoved it away for a moment.

Idhril blinked at Lore, then got up on her knees and looked at the diagrams once more, looking from the male to the female and back to the male.
"How does that work?" she asked, looking up at Lore in perplexity.
He blushed at that question, how could he not. It was almost like talking about one's personal life in public or something to that nature. Lore probably wasn't going to get out of this one, but he really would not want to get into this now.
"That..." he murmured, "Is something better to be explained when you're older."
Idhril blinked again, her golden eyes shadowing slightly, but she nodded and sat in her chair again. Well, maybe she would find it somewhere else in the library. She was curious now, and one that that could be said about her, no matter what age, what stage, or what subject, was that when she was curious she did everything she could to find out what she wanted to know.
"Okay," she smiled at Lore, nodding slightly to show that she wouldn't press the matter. "Can you help me just a little bit more? I need to know how to heal stuff ... like bruises and stuff, and marks around the wrist and stuff, and scars."
Lore looked thoughtful, "Well bruises heal on their own, if the cuts are fresh there are ways to heal it to make sure it does not scar, but once something scars, only healing magic will take it away."
Perhaps he should go and ask Elnara more about this person whom Idhril was looking after.

Idhril looked crestfallen at Lore's answer. "But it looks like someone cut out his heart," she said softly, falling back in her chair. "He has a big scar from here" -she pointed at her shoulder- "to here." And she traced a zigzagging line across her chest and down to her opposite hip. She sighed. "Well ... I'll ask him about it and see what I can do," she murmured, sliding off her chair. She reached for the book again. "I just think it's funny ... if his bruises aren't going away on their own ... and Mama can't heal them ... that's just weird."
She looked up at Lore sadly. "Mama's never not healed before."
"Maybe they're not bruises exactly," Lore murmured, "Maybe he just needs to get healthy."
It did sound like the boy had been neglected quite a bit. Though Lore didn't know enough about him to understand exactly what was wrong.
"Maybe it would help if you knew how bruises happen?" Lore inquired.
"But I do!" Idhril nodded vehemently. "They're from his old masters, they used to beat him up! And when they didn't want him anymore they killed him and threw him in the tree, and now his vase is broken, just like him!"
A pained look crossed her face.
"But I can't fix his vase, so I want to do what I can to fix him instead," she murmured softly.
Lore was about to say something killing implied never living again, but decided otherwise. It sounded bad, but he wasn't sure how to help especially since he had never met the boy before.
"I meant..." Lore deciding to take the calm path, "Knowing how bruises are formed on the body. It is more than just having something form on a place that was hit hard."

Idhril blinked. "Oh," she murmured, blushing slightly. "I see ... well ... I'll go look that up too, then, okay?"
She smiled up at Lore, then compulsively ran around the desk and threw her arms around his stomach, hugging him tightly.
"Thanks for helping me, Papa," she said warmly.
Lore chuckled a bit putting a gentle hand on Idhril's head.
"I'm glad I could be a bit of help at least, if you have any questions just ask and I'll see what I can do."
Though perhaps he was going to have to visit home... he wished he could at least visit the Seconds world.
Idhril smiled and nodded. "I will!" she promised, waving and heading towards the door again. "Bye bye!"
And with a skip and a giggle she was gone to continue her research on her own.
