Some things we can't change. Other things we can.

I was force-fed all my childhood about turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39), soft answers turning away wrath (Proverbs 15:1), the tongue no man can tame (James 3:8 ), so you'd better shut up and walk away from every confrontation. I was taught to suck it up and deal with it, or better yet to just suck it up.

As a result of this misapplication of Scripture, I am a shy, quiet, wimpy, meek, mild, resentful, sullen, angry, enraged, chip-on-the-shoulder person. I never did learn how to argue and to handle confrontation, so I am a loner. And I probably tolerated a lot more evil, mostly petty, banal evil, than God intended I should. People dominate me who shouldn't. Friends, siblings or boyfriends push me around, seemingly enjoying my annoyance, until I cut them off without a word and never speak to them again. Charming, eh? I have the worst kind of personality - the silent ticking time bomb.

BUT, that doesn't mean those Scriptures aren't true! Jesus wasn't a wimp and he didn't walk away from every fight.

Townsend and Cloud, Christian psychologists and authors, write books about relationships from a Godly perspective. A quote from one book:
"In relationships, you get what you tolerate."

How can the above Scriptures be correctly applied? How can a Christian be meek and mild without tolerating evil?

Well - that's one of the thorns in my side. So if you don't want to answer it, that's ok. It's there for a purpose after all.

Ephesians 6:12 says;

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

When Jesus got mad He got mad at the Pharisees. The Pharisees were the problem, not the people they controled. The "World" is the problem, not the people it controls. The world tells people that sex is cool, the people meerly carry out what the "World" tells them.

Our struggle is not agains the people, but against the "World".

Jesus has overcame the "World" and with His help, so can you.
Romans 10:13(?) says "Call on the name of the LORD and you will be saved."

Thanks, Micah. I don't know why I need reminding of these basic facts. It's like they don't stick in my mind. I always forget what's true, when it comes to sore spots, and focus on the hurt and not the solution.

Another fact to remember is: One day, everyone will have to stand before the Judgement Seat and account for their actions.

True, but we should also remember that we are not saved by our actions. Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven.

I know this is old and you may not read it but yea Christ was no weakling. We are to try as much as possible to live at peace with those around us but not to say what they do is ok. The whole turning the other cheek thing is a refrence I believe to when you borrow money and other disputes where they are showing you a sign of disrespect not threatening you.
