Well, the school year's over and I'm now in high school which means.... MARCHING BAND!!! ^^ Woohoo!
Now, because our first show is in the first week of school, we have to practice and drill and rehearse over the summer. My problem is that my upper body strength sucks and moving while playing is STILL really.....er ^^' (I'm a trumpet player!!!)
Does anyone have any advice for playing/marching and how I could build up my upper body strength? Any and all advice would be loved!!!

Upper body strength doesn't play much of a role...unless you're either A) holding set for insane amounts of time or B) a colorguard, battery, or sousa.
If you're that concerned about upper body/arm strength, lift weights. Not those 20-pound-per-ring behemoths at the gym, mind you. Just smaller aerobic weights. Get some that are heavier than your instrument, lift them for about 10-15 minutes a day. For even better practice at set or moving, hold set with the weights until you feel like your arms are going to fall off, and then hold it for about 5 minutes after that. It hurts, but your arm muscles will be better prepared when you're holding set with your instrument. Since the muscles will be more accustomed to a heavier weight than your instrument, it'll be a piece of cake to carry your trumpet at set.
And once your arms are trained, everything else should click into place. 3nodding

Practice just holding your trumpet up, or do lifts with some small weights. The moving while playing will come naturally after a while, but if you're really dying for advice, consciously focus on smoothing out your step (if you guys aren't a traditional style band). I was first introduced to it by playing scales, and moving at the same time.

push ups, lifting weights, if you have a smaller horn like soprano, mello, bari you can also try lifting it with one arm alternating, another is just to stand with you horn up and stat there for a few mins, then try to last longer and longer, you can also do breathing exercises to pass the time smile

First off, just lift your instrument and keep it up for a good thirty minutes or more. To work on moving while playing, just try walking without bouncing up and down like people usually do. If you do that, your embrouchure will get screwed up with every step and you actually lose more air walking normally than if you do a roll step. Just keep flowing from heel to toe. That should help you keep your embrouchure and let you keep a little more air that can be used for playing. Good Luck ^_^

Quote: My problem is that my upper body strength sucks and moving while playing is STILL really.....er ^^' I just joined my school's drumline, and they have me playing bass drum 4 (the other newbie's on number 5, thank god), so I feel your pain. They tell me that after a while, I'll get used to it, so I guess you should just keep practicing. Good luck!

my brother (a trumpet player) and the best trumpet player at my school (who is also very smart and going to HARVARD!!!- the second person from my school to do so) both use this method: hold the bell up fairly high so that your back is supporting more of the weight than your arms. This is also good because depending on how your marching band is arranged, playing the trumpet normally or down will just have the sound hitting your fellow band members or the ground. Think of sound as water from a hose. it goes forward and down. Good Luck biggrin Have fun. biggrin Hope you don't have a bad back. 3nodding
