What I'm curious about is what is the time and reason that the Doctor would tell anyone his name. I mean I have a theory, but ... yeah ... its been in my mind ever since I saw the eppy. Anyone want to share their theory?

Warning: I'm real bored, so this post is like, endless . . . So I'm way the heck late jumping in on this thread, and some of the questions raised were answered in the season finale (not that I'll discuss them), but here's my two cents (for what they're worth): I liked River Song. Why? Probably because she seemed to me to be like: What would happen if a FAN (from our universe, or any other where the Doctor exists as fiction, not fact) became a companion? She'd know all kinds of crazy stuff, and be amazingly competent. No, I'm not saying that river comes from "our" world, or any other parallel world--she's just been with the Doctor so long (in her personal time line) that she's learned all this stuff from him. I've heard folk say she was "showing off" all the time. I didn't think she was showing off-I just thought she was being competent. (why is it when a man is competent, he's just competent, but when a woman is, she's "showing off"? xp ) And that leads into another thing I liked about her: she was, unlike most companions, an ADULT. A grown woman with an identity, an education, and a career, independant of her relationship to the Doctor. Let's face it, looking back over the past 10-20 years of the series, it's amazing how many "recent" companions fit the mold of "young uneducated girl girl with dead-end job and father issues". Not all of those fit all companions, but still: Donna (whom I love): Has crappy temp job. Father is dead, Mom's a b****. Wants a man to rescue her. Martha: Young girl from badly broken home (divorced mum/dad hate each other) looking for love. Rose: 19. No education past o-levels. Father dead. Job boring. Lives in slum. Ace: 16. No father to speak of, hates mother. Kicked out of school. Lives in slum. Mel: Too annoying for words. Skip her. Peri: 19. College drop-out from divorced/remarried family. Hates stepfather. Tegan: About 19. Airline hostess. No immediate family (father/mother) apparent, though her relatives turned up as victims/extras. Yes, I'm a font of useless trivia. But if you take all these as a pattern, the Doctor starts looking like some sort of serial pervert . . . OK, I watch too many crime shows. But the point I'm trying to make is, he seems to want to pick up companions who have very little self-identity, who will worship and adore him, or, as Liz Shaw (Pertwee era) said when she quit as his lab assistant (and I apologize if the quote isn't perfect, it's been nearly 20 years): He doesn't want another scientist to work with him, he wants someone to make tea, bathe his test tubes, and tell him how wonderful he is. Except: have we ever seen any of these relationships last longer than a few years? Now sometimes what happens isn't anyone's fault (ie Rose ending up in another universe), but usually, the companion grows up, gets a brain, and says, "Damn, I'm sick of being chased and shot at all the time! Have a nice life, Doc!" (a la Martha). So, I'm looking at River, a woman who clearly has her own life and identity, and also has a huge, battered diary full of (hopefully) juicy stories about her relationship with the Doctor, and I say WOOT! 2 last things: Reasons for the Doctor to reveal his secret name? How about "Marriage licence" or "birth cirtificate"? lol Also, I don't care too much WHO David Tennant's Doctor is fooling around with, as long as he's fooling around with someone( uh, except Jack. Sorry, Captain!), because he's frikin' adorable, and I wanna watch! So if you don't hate River (or just want to see Doc 10 on a hot date), I've got a story over in the fan-fic subforum heart heart heart eek burning_eyes

Laylora_Paradise leaving who she is i had a thought about River's sqaure gun. people have been wondering how she got it and that it is like Jack's...well what if it IS jack's gun. in parting of the ways jack was left so therefore all of his stuff was still on the TARDIS, so when River arrives on the TARDIS, she could have got a hold of it there.. I think they would've been on sale, because, think about it, they both resided from the 51st Century. And, about Jack leaving his stuff in the TARDIS, as far as I can remember, he didn't bring anything from his spaceship to the TARDIS, unless he had little gadgets tucked away...
