How many people have gotten so good as to form your own style from your art by accident?

A few weeks ago I was practicing general capoeira, you know basics really, and all of a sudden I found myself delivering combos and attacks off the top of my head. I did it over and over again as to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It is a real nice feeling to know your body moves almost on its own in your favorite style.

So, who else has had this happen to them?

I think this is the point of training
You didn't do anything special

yeah it kinda is the point. Copy, master, develop. But well done, it takes a lot of training i think to get to the point where you can develop it and keep it effective

I find that when I actually think about what techniques to use I get slower. Going with the flow of things is generally what a martial artist, I think, is supposed to do. That's why we gain muscle memory, so we don't have to think, only react.

same here
i train and strive for 'no mind'[rely on intuition] -because thinking delays your reaction time. and instinct +good skills/techniques can give you better advantage
when you stop to think about how do i do this-thats one second you just gave to your opponent

Spontaneity is the ultimate goal of any martial artist. It shows a innate grasp of the concepts of motion and principles that define the art. When you reach the point where it stops being "X" and becomes "my X", then you have reached a good place. You are free form what someone else ( your instructor or their instructor or whatever) has defined as "X" You have taken it, and made it part of you, something that can never be taken from you, or denied to you. I say Kudos for reaching that lofty goal.

Having said that, "Go learn more material!" You can never really learn too much, or add too much to "your" art! biggrin

That sounds like developing your own form more then your own style. I would say that i have not quite got that but i am mastering my technigues well.

What exactly do you mean by form or style? Both could mean the same thing or two different things. The way you put them isn't quite clear.

Oh yeah, it's cool when that happens. Although I've never been in a place where I was able to use it fully without a.) having to follow the instructions of somebody else, or b.) getting weird stares from passerby. sweatdrop
