I was sitting here today wondering what the bibliophiles of the guild feel the ultimate dream job for avid readers would be. Do avid readers have very varied dream jobs, or do they tend to dream about being a part of book related professions?

Well, I suppose any career that involves research or handling books would be a preferred choice.

I am a librarian, which many would think of as a dream book job. However, the only time I really have for pleasure reading is my breaks. I can read at the public service desk only if it's really slow, and then I'm expected to read professional journals (i.e., American Libraries or Publishers Weekly or the like) or children's books (since I work in the Children's Services dept.). When I'm not at the public desk, I'm ordering books, preparing programs, and doing other paperwork.

Still, there are some perks. I can get my hands on a lot of the latest titles almost as soon as they're ready to be checked out, and thanks to the above professional reading, I have a good idea of what's coming at lest a few months ahead of time. I'm also at the library a lot of the time, so if I do have a whim for something, I know exactly where to find it.

I'm going to university to become an English teacher and/or translator in Japan. Not really a book-related job, but books use words, so it's kind of similar ^^;.

I'm beginning to pursue my dream job.

Writing novels while I do editing for any publisher I can get or work for a magazine. Preferably doing short articles or advise columns for the magazine.

I am very interested in history and a month ago I met a woman who is an expert in books from the 17th till the early 19th century and got to work with real books from that period on an everyday basis that would be a dream job. She worked in a libary from that period with over 5000 titles. *dreaming*

ooooo....job with old books. I don't see many of those. I always did savor kicking around the archieves in college. The best I get here is "new book smell."

I would love to either work at or own a book store. That would be the ultimate job for me, other than voice over acting. X3

Today, I went to my library to volunteer most of my summer and after school time, which in turn gives me credit for a Bright Futures scholarship. Not only that, but I got to see how they run things. They placed me in the children's area. I think I died a little inside...
There were books all out of order! D:

Haha, but any how... I feel very happy with giving my time to the library.

Childrens Departments always need more help in the summer, so it wasn't an insult, just a good use of resources. At least you won't have to deal as much with the grumpy older patrons. And yeah, the shelves get really messed up when the little ones rampage through. Keeping them in order is most of what our high-school ages pages do all day.

I can never stick a book out of place again after this experience. I feel for all the librarians and books keepers. X3

I've never done such a thing in the first place... First of all, because I know how annoying it is when you look for a book on the computer (I'm talking library now, not bookstore) and you know it's there, but you can't find it on the shelves because somebody misplaced it. And secondly, because I've volunteered at my local library last year; I know what an awful lot of work it is to track the missing books down and put them where they belong...

Anyway. My ideal job would be professor of Ancient History or English Literature at some esteemed university with a huge, ancient library. I'd be the goofiest but best loved teacher on campus. You know, the one everyone knows is a total wackjob, but is awesome nonetheless? That would be me. =]

Either a social worker, or marine psychologist.
