I've heard dreams like this could last for never and ever
I'm planning on being in a rock band for my profession, and I've heard that you can make it big if you have talent and you put your heart into it. What I want to know is, how likely is it for a band to make it in the music scene. I'm not saying make it huge like AFI or Mindless Self Indulgence huge, but atleast big enough to sustain you until you retire. I know that the music you play affects it, so for the sake of the answer my band plays punk/alternative.
I've heard stories how they crash

Slim to none to be brutally honest. The sad truth is that it's more about your looks and how well you fit the cookie cutter image record labels are looking for this week rather than your talent. The rule of thumb is, if you're going to be a music major, double major into something useful that will put food on your table WHEN the music thing doesn't work out.

I'd say that these days almost no one makes it big. There are too many people out there who play, and its just a flood of horrible music choices from teens that want to see sexy emo bums of talented musicians. There are those few who are good enough to gain some recognition that will actually matter, but it is rare for a band to be big in the US and not either sell out or have the cookie cutter thing going all ready. There are other countries were you can become know and famous easier but its still almost impossible. You have a better chance at acting and making a living then being a musician and making a living. Most musicians gig for new equipment if they are lucky.

I myself have chosen to start a profession as a high school teacher to support my music. Starting a musical career is a tough thing, and it takes years and years of professional training. The keyboardplayer of my main band is in a music school which trains people to become professional artists, but even then it's a deal that doesn't pay much. You'll always have to keep a dayjob on the side. Only a few can actually live off their musical career.
Also, keep in mind, when you actually do retire, you'll be broke. Playing music does not build funds for your retirement.

To be optimistic out of the honesty of those already weighing in on the topic; Make use of the internet and home-recording and all of the resources that are available to you now. You have an enormous advantage over your idols and predecessors, simply in terms of how easy it is to communicate with others.
I'm not saying that it's a sure bet, and that these are the image of how it should go, but look at a band like the Arctic Monkeys. They're a poster-child for trying hard and getting somewhere. Or Lemon Demon. That band is really just one guy, and not only is he famous across the internet for his band, but he's also popular for creating an entire genre of Flash animations, as well as a Harry Potter puppet show on Youtube.
The internet is a vast, inexhaustible resource. If you try really really hard, you'll make headway. Maybe not the rich 'n famous rockstar dream, but it'll get you a few feet farther than people expected.

Im in the same boat as you bro...I want to at least go on a tour with a band. Id say if you work your a** off and fingers to the bone you could make it. You just gotta find those group of people who are willing to go 200% over the norm. Also you gotta have a back up plan. Its just so you can fund yourself till the music can. I say you can do it bro. GO FOR IT!!!

i live in a town which has a contempory music college in it a 500 students each 2 years all studying music at degree level and the amount that make it or get some fame 10 of the 500, the rest probably playing pubs for along time. so my point is your extremely unlikely to make it anywhere even with proper backing, i personally wouldnt mind playing gigs at pubs for a long time better then my current employment status

The usual way of getting bigger and bigger is to gig whenever and wherever you can. Play local bars and clubs, especially if you're in a town that's big on music. That's how most well-known bands got big, by starting small. Or by having emo hair. But ******** them.

you can have all the heart in it.. all the talent... everyhting.. but the fact is... if you dont have a d**k in your mouth you're not going anywhere.. for instance. My friend David is an amzing guitarist.. but now he's in a very popular band.. Breathe Carolina... its s**t in my opinion.. but he's making a few bucks..
