Try Hellsing. It's not a very popular anime in America... or manga for that matter. The series is can be bought as a box set in Best Buy, eBay, or some other places. The episodes are on Youtube and other video hosting sites, and the DVD's can be rented from the library. Well, where I live, at least. You can try the original anime, which is only 13 episodes long. But it only follows two of the books. The remaining episodes are of their own plot and are irrelivant to the manga. The OVA's are still in production, and can b bought as a collectors edition or individual DVD's from Best Buy. There are four out currently, and the remaining are in production. Three have been translated into english. Unfortunately, the fourth one is impossible to find on Youtube. Hellsing isn't mainstream in America, seeing as it has vampires, werewolves, catboys, and ghouls in it. The original series rating is unknown to me, the OVA's are rated 16 and up, and the manga is rated mature for fantasy violence and graphic images, and sometimes language.
You could also try FLCL. It's a short, 6 episode comedy anime. On the downside, it's no longer in production.

Seconded. I also recommend Trinity Blood, as other fans have noted that the two series are somewhat similar. However, if vampires aren't your cup of tea and you want some samurai action, I recommend Rurouni Kenshin and Peacemaker.

My personal favorites have been Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Saiyuki, Excel Saga, Ronin Warriors, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I'd recommend all of them. Ronin Warriors is old-school, but the rest are fairly recent.

After School Nightmare (I think that's what it's called) is awesome. So is...Pet Shop of Horrors. Beautiful art in that.
