There aren't really any colors in nature, only the various wavelengths that make up light, which are absorbed and reflected by all the objects around us. the reflected wavelengths enter the eye, which, in turn, sends signals to the brain. This causes us to "see" the said purple monkey, which my in fact not be purple at all!
