Seriously. Once this schoolyear is over with, I need to devote my time to becoming familiar with the current time period so I don't feel like some sort of foreign time-traveler.

I guess it's from being sick and out of sorts for so long (and being homeschooled for two years), but I can remember some things from my childhood and early teens (11, 12, 13), but the last couple years until more recently is almost a blur (I'm 17 now). I've missed out on so much and sometimes I feel like I'm from some other planet when people ask me about recent pop-culture whatnot. I haven't gone to the movies of my own free will for years, I stopped listening to mainstream commercial radio when I was still in elementary school, and I'm really picky about what I watch on tv, so I'm clueless as to that, too. I swear, I'm going to make my family rent some random old movie every week during the summer so I can "catch up".

Oh, and books. BOOKS. I can't wait to have the time to read those things again. There are OH so many books that I want to read. Augh. I'm going to subscribe to one of those sci-fi mail-order book clubs and buy all of the classics. YEAH. gonk heart

So many things are references and allusions to things I've never heard or seen, that I feel so lost now that I'm feeling better and able to go back out into the world again.

I guess this ranty thread has a point...

- What were some good movies, books, and tv shows you guys liked over the last couple years?

- What "classic" or "cult" movies/books do you assume most people have seen/read.

- What was the last movie you went out to see that you liked?

- What was the last bok you read that you liked?

- Man, those radio stations sure have turned to crap, haven't they?

- Ever feel really out of the loop with life?

Some movies that I liked were the Illusionist, Across the Universe, Sweeney Todd, Untraceable, Sunshine (OOOHHH favorite actor in it *swoon*), The Bee Movie (Brian and I saw it for our two year anniversary), Dan in Real Life, Horton hears a Who. Blahblahblah.
TV shows. Ugly Betty, Reaper, America's best Dance crew, etc etc.
Books: The Looking Glass Wars, And Stephanie Meyer Twilight series. Avtually I only liked Twilight, the other ones were so depressing and she kind of ran out into tangents. No thanks.

The last movie I went out to see was The Bee Movie. But I really want to see The Strangers, Twilight, NEWBATMANMOVIE, etc

My Father works at a radio station. neutral He's a DJ neutral neutral neutral

Yup. I'm out of touch with life.

I really wanted to see Sweeny Todd, but I never got around to it. I think the last movie I went out to see in a theater was the second Spiderman one, but that's 'cause Veggie brought be with some friends. That was what, a year ago? XP

I'm actually going out to the local independent theater with my mom and a friend to see Blade Runner this week. They always show cool old movies and weird foreign films too. 3nodding

I don't get Ugly Betty. It just looked like another kid/teen drama, so I never started watching. Maybe I should watch the next time I see it while flipping, then? I remember watching a couple of episodes of Reaper, and it was pretty funny, but only in the "so bad it's funny" kind of way (but I did like it). I don't really watch any of those silly reality shows, but I did see some of this season's American Idol, 'cause my mom wouldn't let me change the channel. XD
The shows I follow regularly are Monk, Psych (but there haven't been any new ones in ages), House, Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures (new Doctor Who spin-off), and Project Runway.

The last non-school books I read were Mortal Engines, Predator's Gold, and Infernal Devices, which are the first three books in Phillip Reeve's Hungry City Chronicles. Basically, about a dystopian steampunk future in which almost all land is barren desert and the surviving "cities" have become giant, moving steam-powered fortresses that "hunt" smaller cities. It's pretty neat. 3nodding
Oh yeah, and my brother loaned me World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, and I'm halfway through those.

Next, I want to finish reading the Hungry City Chronicles (the library didn't have the last book before), then read some of Jules Verne's works (I got halfway through Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, but didn't have time to finish), then some things like A Clockwork Orange, Atlas Shrugged, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Discworld series, and whatever else strikes my fancy. Oh, and I wanted to get the German version of the first Harry Potter book, just 'cause that might be fun to read, and it'll help my grammar.

Oh, I didn't know! Maybe it's just the local stations in New York, or at least in my city. They play some dreadful crap.

Oh yeah! I remember that trip! Good times. It's been so freakin' long since I last saw you Percival! I MISS YOU!! gonk

Oh! The Discworld Series? Good choice. They're always so witty and entertaining.

And don't worry about being out of the Loop. The last book I read was DRACULA. So I'm out of touch of time too. And the last movie I saw was the '34 Dracula too. But I will be seeing Don't Mess With The Zohan soon. cool

And Percival! I'm definitely going to invite you to my house sometime to watch this awesome movie that will leave you totally STUNNED. "What The Bleep Do We Know!?" You'll love it. biggrin

Once I'm done with finals an' stuff, we'll have to get the ol' gang back together and go somewhere. domokun

Yeah. I don't remember how I heard of Discworld, but it looks really neat. There's SOOO many books though. Is there any specific order to them?

Ahhahaa. I guess you don't read that often then? Or do you just prefer the older books?

Cool. Sounds like fun! It'll have to wait until after finals though. sad

Well, I've only read about 3. But the Rincewind series starts with Color Of Magic and goes to Light Fantastic, Soucery, Eric, Interesting Times and The Last Continent. The Nightwatch ones I'm not too certain of.

I know I need to read more, (What with me getting that English Honors Award Of Excellence again...) but I just can't bring myself to do it! The A.D.D just kicks in and whoo, I'm out the door!
