I'm going to be writing a novel about a woman who's sister is killed by her online stalker through an MMORPG- Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. She takes up the game to find said PC and gets caught up in a bigger conspiracy.

Now I've seen .hack// just about everything, played the games, I used to have Second Life (though my comp won't redownload it now), Mabinogi messed with my PC so I deleted it (too bad, it was a good one too), and I started Pirates Online. Does anyone have other free or interesting games, anime, manga, books, etc. that I can use for research?

Hm, I'd say that .hack would be your best bet, considering it pretty much is a novel! (No, seriously.)

World of Warcraft is currently the number one mmo out there; it's interesting... It's not free.

I don't know if this will help, but hey:

They have a game list.

And then of course, there's Gaia, eventually!

MapleStory is probably one of the largest, free to play MMO's out there and it has a massive community. That would be a good choice. Plus it has a fun little side-scrolling view that you don't typically get in MMO's.

And, if you're using this solely for just research, then I hear that you can actually get a 30 day trial of World of Warcraft, which is definitely the biggest pay-to-play MMO.

Those two will be your best bets. Um... can't think of much else. I've also played Rapplez, Fly for Fun, and Granado Espada. Yeah, I use to play a lot of MMO's sweatdrop

I would go with the thirty day free trial of World of Warcraft if I were you. WoW (the acronim for World of Warcraft) has several features which make players comunicate with each other often - specifically the guilds. There's also something called Ventrilo which allows people to communicate vocally with eachother simaltaniously while playing online games.

Notably the story line in WoW is a bit dull, so you may have trouble paying attention, or trouble staying interested whilst roughing your way through devices souly created to make players waste as much of their free time as is humanly possible on their games. Ah well though. That's all the insight I can share with you.

^_^

[Then again, I've never played MapleStory...]
