I'm thinking that the white always represents Bella, in this case especially since it's a queen and not a king. I think the red pawn represents Edward - for Twilight, it seems like Bella was "taking a bite out of the apple" by entering the vampire world.

My interpretation (please excuse my spelling): The chess board could mean how complicated her life is at this point in time and all the choices she has to make and how she has to think them through. The hovering red peice could mean her future looming on her horizon.

I saw the cover at walmart. I was like OMG IT is great! Mrs. Meyer has great taste in her covers.
