Eh, it pretty much failed and never reached outside of Japan. It's probably why people don't consider the PS3 to be doing so well right now. As much as I like the PS3, it seems to have an identity issue. People don't know whether to think of it as a gaming console or media center.
Same with the PSX, they tried to incorporate more media into it, but the timing was bad and the appeal wasn't really there. The PS3 came around at a time where there is small appeal to HD and more media, so it's surviving a lot better than the PSX.

I see the PS3 as more of a multi media machine. But really as the new face of what video game consoles are going to be.
Both the 360 and Wii even have media capabilities to them and can do more then just play games. So I really see the PS3 as the new standard for what a gaming console is going to be in the future.
