While I didn't know science was about competing, I was more of a scientist for the greater good, not the greater good of my wallet, this was an interesting article. What do you think? Are we falling behind? Does it matter?

the reluctance to federally fund stem cell research
This is what has been bothering me for years as this could be a potential cure for type 1 diabetes which my sister and grandma have.

The competition isn't just about money. The competition is one of conflicting values. The United States, despite its world status, is a strong bastion of traditional conservative values and beliefs. These values often conflict with modern science, particularly over the issues of life that arise with cloning, stem cell research, and genetic engineering. Since the US is a democracy, it seems unlikely much will change any time soon. Political values reflect the values of the people that elect the politicians.

This is a very tough time for science in the US. We've made so many breakthroughs that we can't work with, thanks to conservative laws and barriers. Stem-cell research, the LHC, cloning.
All becuase of stubborn clinging to tradition.
Like said above, this is a democracy of sorts, so the majority of the country and the government both need to be in favor of Progressive science and technology.
