i'm trapped in a burning building Its easy to talk about your bass, but more goes into your sound?
What about your whole rig? Practice or gigging? What amps, cables? Strings?
I run a Jazz (MIM) with Regular Slinky's. They were on sale when I needed strings, I liked them and never went back to Fender strings. I'd use Elixir if I could drop $40 a set.
I've always used Monster Cables. I don't even know what other cables sound like. I was told by someone I trust to stick with Monster, so I do.
My practice amp is an Acoustic B20, and I'm saving for a gigging amp right now, likely an Acoustic B220. The Acoustic brand is just coming back, but they're simple, durable and for a 20-watt amp with a 12" driver it hits pretty well. Their 4x10" cabs are awesome, but thats a bit out of my range right now.
I pack a Korg GA-30 tuner also, cause I had like $17 on me and needed a tuner.
but man, you have to see the view

I have a Brawley Artemis 5 that I run with Rotosound 66's. Occasionally I'll run flats on there if I get a bug up my a**, but mostly I do the roundwounds. I use planetwave cables all around. From the head to the cab, bass to the pedals, etc. Everything is planet waves. Love those cables. Have a Sovtek Big Muff Pi and a Morley Power wah for my effects. For my head I have a 700 watt power amp that is slaved to a BBE 383 processor/preamp. Attached to that is a Korg rack tuner all in a metal road ready case. And my cabinet is an Ampeg SVT 8x10.

My main axe is a Fender Reggie Hamilton standard jazz bass, and if I'm feeling like I need more range I have an Ibanez SR506 6-string. I use monster cables exclusively(AMAZING cables) and run my basses through an SWR working man 115, it's a 220watt combo amp. The amp works out nice at gigs because it has a direct out so I can plug right into a PA. For a tuner it's just a korg handheld tuner, nothing special. I use elixer strings because they sound/feel awesome and they last forever.

I'm now playing a Schecter Stiletto elite, D'Addario medium halfs, to an Ashdown 300 mag, and a kustom 4x10, with some of brand 25 foot cable from the guitar to the amp, and then custom made silver 5 food cable from the amp to the cab. (made by me). I don't find wires to make a difference in sound, only in how much power you can feed to your cab. I used a heavy gauge heavy wire for that part. Also I got a Berhinger V-Amp, but I haven't used it yet, I need more wires. As for settings I usually keep it prity bassy, with a bit of treble in the mix, and very low middle. I like a good bit of gain as well some times. Also wah is fun so I'll be using that a bit as well. Mostly I like to keep it low and heavy.

Ashdown MAG300 with a the MAG 410 and 115 cabs (looking to upgrade but haven't found the cash and I've been too lazy to put the thing up for sale), and an MTD Kingston 5'er, Ibanez GSR100 I recently redid, (exactly like that except black back instead of blue and it's a P-bass), an Ibanez TR600, an MIM Fender P-bass, a Squier VM Jazz (epic for the cash, looks like the new crew at Squier's trying to turn the name around), and old Dean acoustic. Looking to pick up a fretless when I get my tax return as well.

dude... i use so much stuff to get the tone i want more then just the bass! i'm only using a beringer amp head, but i use a standard tuner, a digitone synth-wah stomp, a big muff stomp, and i usually run thru a pod or my G4 using logic as a amp modeler. i'm starting to experiment with running my bass thru a analog synth as a envelop filter and pre-amp. along with that i only use elixir strings for the tone and the feel. if they get to start sounding dead, i boil them and they're as good as new. that'll fly once or twice. after that i throw them out. as for eq settings, i try to keep the low end down because a bass already has more then enough of those. i usually cut 2k because that's were most of your mechanical and fret noise are, and i boost the mid-highs (other then 2k) for a clear tone that'll cut thru in a live venue. now all of this is for live gigs. in the studio, i don't use anything other then my bass. i'll direct in into the pres and do all my eq and fx in post-mix
