Hey

Being a section leader is really awesome, I'm brass captain at my school, so I'm not in charge of one section, but all brass sections. I play mellophone.

Tips, i would say, are if someone is doing something wrong, tell them, but dont like, flip s**t. Especially if its rookies. If you're nice to them about it, they might try to fix it more. Yelling is stupid. Being a good leader means telling people what they are doing wrong, what to do better, and being able to be nice and have fun with them at the same time.

Yeah, just remember we're all human, we all make mistakes, don't call them on every little thing, cause they've probably caught you on stuff they didn't bring up. Unless its a recurring thing that needs fixing. If they mess up, they know it, they don't need to get yelled at for it.

Social events for the win. Just little things, like a section pizza outing or something like that. The more a person feels part of something, the more likely they are to want to participate in marching and playing their best, because they'll be surrounded by their peers and friends. That's my theory, anyways. : )

Hey...I'm leader of my section, too. Just bash the bad players over the head with a stand if they get out of hand...I'm just kidding. That was stupid. No, really, being a section leader is very easy. In fact, I get screwed over all the time by the members of my section. It's sad...but I do.

1. Set a good example by doing what you're supposed to, when you're supposed to, and doing it well.

2. Don't leave your newbies isolated. Part of your job is integrating them into the band. Make sure not only to help them with their marching and music and other band stuff if they need it, but to make sure they aren't friendless. If they don't feel like they belong, they won't come back next year. Spirit bags help, especially if you all take turns bringing them in, but also make sure they aren't spending breaks and meals alone in the corner. Invite them to join you and your friends or introduce them to other members whom they might share interests with. Just get them to be part of a group within the band whether that's the trombone section, the low brass section, or a group of friends.

3. Be a good teacher. People learn in different ways. If you have a newbie who isn't getting a skill after the first lesson, don't repeat yourself - try a different way of teaching the same skill. You might want to demonstrate, or give detailed verbal instructions, or have the student try the skill in a one-on-one so you can correct things as he's doing them. Above all though, don't expect the kids to know things they've never encountered before.

4. Anticipate. Be at practice early, know which parent volunteer to send the kid who forgot his regulation socks to, make sure your newbies know what they need to pack for their first show and how to pass inspection, know basic care for your instrument, etc. Demonstrating this kind of knowledge proves that you deserve your position and encourages the underlings to look up to you. Heading off possible boneheaded moves on your watch is important to keeping yourself out of trouble too. If your newbie and his friend are in the parking lot outside the band room skateboarding before practice and one of them thinks it would be funny to skate around with a trombone, you're probably going to get an earful about that from your higher ups if you don't tell them off, especially if the instrument is a school-owned horn and something bad happens to it.

Hey you too? Im section leader of trombones at me school, Im a junior , theres like 11 of them.

Some things that I was going to do were

1. Have at least one Brass Party so that everuone will get to know each other and be more comfortable, so that they will preform better

2. Hold 3-4 sectionals over the summer so that they can learn and memorize music faster.

3. Just set a good example for them to follow, as you would in any leadership position.

It helps if you have someone to play good cop/bad cop with. I went out for officership, and, though I didn't get it, I'm doing everything I can to help the person who did.

I have already had to haul one kid across the field (now, I'm the only one whose orders he will follow! (though the officers get the same because all they have to do is threaten to sic me on him))

So, as you can see, I'm the bad cop. If you work with the officers, and you work with me (since my section's officer unofficially named me as a junior/vice officer of sorts), then I will be nice; when being nice stops working, I'll get nasty.

Also, no making empty threats. If you do, then those whom you are working with won't take you seriously. If you make a threat and they continue doing what you said not to do, then make good on that threat.
