OK, guys, I've got a problem. It's minor but it needs attention and I figured this would be an OK place to start looking for answers.

Occasionally, I remove the pick guard on my guitar (Gibson LP studio) so I can properly clean the instrument.

Recently, however, the hole for one of the two screws that hold it down has become stripped out, so that the screw shakes loose while I play. It's yet to fall completely out, but I'm sure it is inevitable.

I want to repair the hole so that I will no longer have a screw loose, but I am not sure how to do it.

I have had a friend who has played for far longer than I tell me I have to bore out the hole to the depth of the screw, cut off a dowel rod into the hole and glue it in, sand it down, and re-finish the part. He also mentioned that I could damage the guitar doing this, and seeing how I have no experience in woodworking I don't want to try it.

Before he told me this, I thought I could fill it in with some wood putty and drill the screw back down into the hole. Can I get away with this, or no?

I could take it to someone else to fix it but I prefer to keep it DIY so long as it's cheaper.

(P.S.:In the mean time I have removed the pick guard. Also, apologies for the wall of text.)

Well the way that I see it you can go one of three ways here.
1. You can shell out the cash to get it done professionally.
OR you can make a decision. Do you want a guitar with or without a pickguard.
You could either:
2. Leave the pickguard off, and deal with having holes on the front of your guitar.
or
3. Put some super glue in the hole (use a toothpick) and apply some to the screw and screw it in permanently.
