OK. So. My cousin wanted a site made for this waterbox thing he designed... and I've been so stuck. He wanted to get something online for it, so I just kinda gave up trying to make it look cool. I plan on reworking it, but any suggestions would be great.

Ugh. I feel like I tried everything... and it still looks.... so basic. sweatdrop

This was also my first experience with buying a domain and hosting... it was quite a process, but just because they wanted to change their site name half way through. Having an official website is really cool tho!

Got a heap of suggestions blaugh

- when I can't think of a good layout, I like to look around for one that I like, and work from that basic idea. I used the overlapping layers thing from the iRO site in my kung fu site, and it was a lot easier to build it up into something of my own from there.

- if you have a white background, I think you really need to have other visually appealing aspects to the site to save it from looking a bit plain. Maybe a fancy border, or a simple patterned background around the table you've got the main content in?

- could be just me, but I don't like large text sweatdrop 11px or 12px usually look nice (I think it was 12px for Arial...)

- I'm on 1152x864 res, and the right hand side is looking a bit plain. Maybe center the main table?

- change the link colours to anything other than the default ones

- the menu at the top would look cool with some rollover effects, which can be done pretty easily with CSS or with javascript (I think Dreamweaver has a thing for it in Behaviours or something)

- more pictures... pictures of dogs? So if someone went to the site without already knowing what it was about, they would see dogs, see dog water box, and connect the two to figure out what it is, all without even reading the text.

- learn CSS! Its amazing the amount of power and freedom that you get with it, not to mention the fact that you don't have to specify the font face and size for every paragraph xp

We think a lot alike... but then again it might just be good sense. wink I looked at all sorts of layouts to get good ideas.... sorta worked. I was thinking about more pictures... I had the idea for rollovers on the paws too, I just didn't have time to do it... and yesterday Hizzahn gave me a crash course in CSS!! Hehe. I'm definly going to do some major revamping...

Thank you for your suggestions! heart I will use them!!

I guess I need to just take some time away from it (it was a major source of stress) and then I can come back and make it look cool. I'm just glad I got it uploaded and done. Phew.

I don't have a way of linking to the this quite yet but I did go through and make the site in CSS. I also did a little tweaking to it. Once I get Silver to post the page I adjusted I think a brainstorm of ideas for navigation would be the main priority. The banner combined with the links doesn't site well with me crying

We are going to the bookstore to peruse the graphic related books. Wish us luck? whee

Good luck! If you find any CSS related books by Eric Meyer, I totally recommend them 3nodding

I would say:

* fade the edges of the picture or make it not so square. round edges may look nice
* Try to stay away from black text on white.. it's blah..
* Try to keep the text together and not going around a square image.
* Balance. if you want to have the layout only be as wide as the top banner, then try making the text smaller and putting it next to the image like this:
[] []
* when you have short ammounts of text with your pictures, try to make the pictures smaller or smoother, or you can add some sort of frame to hold the text.
*make it so that the text is never more wide than the top banner.

Center it, make a good bg, make the font smaller, put the content in an iFrame, lots of stuff.

No. No iframes. Use OBJECT if anything but just use CSS, much better.

Design wise I am not really the guy to talk to but making it not slammed up against the left side would balance it out a bit. I think the paw prints under the links are cute redface

I think adding some sort of background color even a light cream would tie it together more.

In summary: Give it some whitespace on the edges, give it a bg color, and tie it together with some sort of border element, thin black borders work great.

That's my worthless 2 cents, have fun with it.

I CSSified and did a few tweeks to the page, just to get the ball rolling on this site again. Waterbox

loks nice, but the background stops short on the home page due to the size of the one image I guess... just thought I would point that out incase no one notised.. also.. with the back and next buttons... don't loop it so the last takes you back to the first.. people might keep clicking next and re-read part of it and get annoyed sweatdrop
