Jesse sat under an awning at a local cafe, sipping a cup of strong coffee. Sy was scrambling out around in the pouring rain, plucking up worms and bugs.
He claimed that's what his rat-friends liked.

Darry walked hand in hand with Katya, ignoring the rain as it drenched them both. Katya munched on a bell pepper like an apple, crunching the seeds.
"Gettin' kind of cold," Darry said. Katya nodded. "You wanna get dry for a sec?"
"Whatebuh."
"M'kay."
The cafe they happened on was packed with pretentious literates and people whoring off of the free wi-fi, so Darry decided sitting outside would be best.
"Still gon' be cold," Katya said. Darry just shrugged, wiping off his sunglasses with his mildly dry sleeve.

"Yo," Jesse greeted the new people. Sy's head perked at the noise and smiled and waved at the pepper girl and her father.
"Hi!" Oh, the poor drenched boy.

Darry looked up and gave a nod.
"Heya. I like the eye patch."
Katya munched on her pepper, arching a brow imperiously. Hmm. She was tempted to be rude, but then again she'd seen him wallowing in the mud and the bugs. He couldn't be all bad.
"Hi."

Sy hadn't been saying hi to either of them in particular, but hey!
"Hi. Wanna come get some bugs with me?"
Jesse just chuckled at the comment.
"Kinda need it. Missin' an eye an' all."

Katya shrugged sedately, finishing off her pepper.
"Sure. I wan' a spider if we fin' one."
Darry nodded, looking interested.
"Really? I knew a blind guy once, he had two glass eyes that he could just pop out. He'd freak everyone out and sneeze and send 'em both flying, and he'd just laugh when everyone started havin' shitfits while they were rollin' on the floor."
He paused looking thoughtful.
"Wish I could do that."

Sy nodded.
"I got one. 'S not big, though." He pointed to a piece of canvas heaped with slimies.
Jesse lifted his eye patch and showed off the shredded, eye-lid-less, empty cavity. Buaha. He loved it when people were honestly interested.

Darry look surprised, then nodded.
"Well, you still got one," he said. "I'm Darry. The sprat throwing mud is Katya. Katty, no throwing mud."
"LEMME 'LONE."
Darry just rolled his eyes.

Katya looked at her companion in irritation, a sloppy handful of mud in her clutches.
"Yer a boy," she said. "Boys like gettin dirty, dontcha?"

"I went through that stage. Sy there was a wanderer."
"Sure," Sy nodded, "but not like that. Mama Evie would get pi--angry. Real mad. Just don't. Help me find some worms instead."

Darry sighed.
"Katya's a hitter. Not sure she's gonna outgrow that."
Speaking of the temperamental brat, Katya was looking at Sy with an air of superiority. She didn't care if Darry got mad at her for getting dirty. Not that he would really notice anyway, unless she flung mud right in his face.
"Okay," she said imperiously. "I still wanna spider, though."
