I am always curious if people use store-bought patterns or create their own/ make it up as they go along when making amigurumi? I not very experienced yet, so I use a pattern. However I'm thinking of messing with the patterns a bit to make something more original. Still, it's not the same as making your own from nothing at all. Is anybody else in the same predicament as me? If not, do you have any tips about making your own patterns?

I have made a few from patterns, with some modifications of my own.

I love the knit amigurumi patterns at craftyalien.com

I have bought package of patterns that includes the bunny, raccoon and hedgehog, and the package that contains the cow, rooster and goat.

I modified the raccoon pattern from that site to make a fox, since the animals looked a bit similar.

Currently I am making my own pattern from scratch of an Angelfish, but I am not sure how it will turn out sweatdrop I'll make my own topic on it so you can track my progress.

I would suggest following patterns first until you gain a bit of understanding of how it is all put together and then go for it! Have fun! You can always undo your work if it gets totally mutated biggrin

That's a good idea. Thanks for the advice; I'll give it a try.

I've bought a few patterns, found some free ones online, and also made a few of my own. What i like best is to modify an already existing one. ^^

When I was doing amigirumi a lot, I made my own pattern. I basically found a body shape that I liked in a free pattern and then modified it to have the head and arms I wanted. I've made animals with storebought/internet patterns before though too.

The only amigurumi patterns I've found are troublesome, so I don't use them.
I just make each amigurumi as I go.
It makes them all unique I think.

It depends on what I want, I guess. I've found some incredibly cute patterns which I have to make. However, sometimes I just like to make a random shape and do my own thing. I've also found some very cute Japanese patterns. Since these have charts, and I don't read Japanese, I just wing it from the charts for some nice results.
