Eee, Finnish! I really want to learn it, but it's so difficult to find any resources for it - I live in New Zealand, and there's only a very very small Finnish community (in fact, I've never met a Finnish person before in real life...). Does anyone have suggestions on how to start? I read a lot of your posts and try to recognise little words, seeing as I have no real course to take at the moment, or I listen to 'Suomirock'...

Many thanks, but I have used that site quite a few times before, and although it's helpful, for some reason it makes my browser stop working. *le sigh*

Is anyone familiar with the Saami language? It is spoken in the northern regions of Sweden, Finland, and the area of Russia that borders Finland, and I am not so sure about Norway.

I learned that Saami is related more to Finnish than the other Scandinavian languages.

Nobuo Uematsu, composer of the Final Fantasy videogame music, in one of the songs (two of them), they sing in Saami.

Someone who wanted a translation, they had to translate from Saami to Finnish to English.

Finnish sounds like a beautiful language to me, I wish to write poems in the Finnish language 3nodding

I've heard of Sámi being related to Finnish, and yes it's spoken in Northern Norway as well. It recommend this link on more information on it. It's the indigenious languages of the northern parts of Scandinavia (Except Iceland and the Faroe Islands) and Finland. It's separated into four major dialects. If you want a Sámi singer to listen to I recommend "Wimme" from the Nordic Roots Album.

Definitely want to learn Finnish. It sounds like a mixture of Mandarin and Spanish sweatdrop

I am not sure if this site has been put up here yet.

I love how they pronounce the "r" like the Spanish "r" with the nice trill.

How do I pronounce the å (ruotsalainen oo), W (kaksoisvee), and Y?

Please use it in a sample sentence. Most of all, I am having a bit of trouble with the "Y"

Ruotsalainen oo ( Swedish o) is a long "o" sound, so say Oat but extend the sound.
"Åå" is also used in Norwegian, Danish, Walloon, and welsh (I think).

Puhun vähän.... (a little) and only enough to say this:
Hei olen (name). Olen ruotsalainen ja tanskalainen (danish?)

Can someone please inform me (anteeksi if it's already been mentioned) of word order rules, if any, in Finnish sentences? SVO? SOV? SOB? (haha, just jokes).
Those grammar sites tend to overlook the delicate topic of actually forming sentences. sad

This thread is so dead... sad
Somebody say something! I'm useless at Suomi...
But one of the teachers at my school had left a note on a door for some new teachers that were from Finland... and it had 'Terve', 'anteeksi' and 'kiitos' on it. I felt so special, I'm willing to bet that I'm one of the only students in the school that would even know what language that is. biggrin Fangirl moment!
