Katatonia is a band formed in 1987, hailing from Stockholm. They originally started out as a death/doom band, but made a drastic stylistic change in 1998 with the release of "The Discouraged Ones." Since then, their style has been more of a doomy gothic metal/rock.
I adore this band. Jonas Renske has to be one of the most talented voices in metal...He manages to sing in entirely clean vox that are very emotional and despairing without sounding whiny or the dreaded "e" word."12" (Old-school, doomy Katatonia)"Will I Arrive"

I must be the only one who's not crazy over their newest album. I mean... it's good, but not HOLYSHITSBRICKS good. I don't know. Somehow the album just seems so... muted in a way?

Geniesaur I must be the only one who's not crazy over their newest album. I mean... it's good, but not HOLYSHITSBRICKS good. I don't know. Somehow the album just seems so... muted in a way? No, you're not alone in this regard. I can't say I'm very fond of all this Tool-ish post-rock stuff they've been experimenting with since The Great Cold Distance. Of all the tracks on Night is the New Day, only "Forsaker" jumped out at me right away. Everything else I'm either indifferent toward or actually dislike. I had the same reaction to TGCD initially as well: only a few tracks I liked right off the bat. Eventually, I warmed up to the rest of the album, but there are still two or three tracks I wish they would've replaced with some of the bonus stuff from the singles released off that album.
As it stands, Dance of December Souls remains my favorite work by them by a nautical mile. I doubt anything they do in the future will measure up to that masterpiece.

I have Viva Emptiness, I really enjoyed this album, but it seemed more of a Rock album then Metal. Are any of their other albums similar to this one?

You are correct; Katatonia post-BMD are best described as a hard post-rock/shoegaze outfit with some occasional doom/gothic metal elements. The closest thing to VE is probably the follow-up, The Great Cold Distance. Like I mentioned before, I found that album difficult to appreciate, but it was apparently quite popular, mostly on the basis of its three singles. If you ever decide to pick up TGCD, opt for the limited edition: the two bonus tracks are well worth it. Also, the preceding album, Last Fair Deal Gone Down has only two subpar songs on it, and some particularly excellent tracks like "Clean Today" or "Sweet Nurse."
My preferred cuts from TGCD:DeliberationFollowerSoil's Song

Wow, I really like those songs. I think I'll go dl that album.
I find it so hard to find good rock albums, I need to find more artists. And one of these days I'll check into when Katatonia played Metal.

Also recommend you look into the Danish gothic rock/metal band The Loveless. No annoying female vocalist, no operatic or symphonic pretensions, and no shameless abuse of keyboards. The distortion effect they use on their guitars as well as the production makes them sound very similar to modern Katatonia. "Follow" is such a great song.
And whenever you do look into metal Katatonia, Dance of December Souls and the For Funerals To Come EP > Brave Murder Day, at least in my opinion.

I acquired there discography at a LAN party a while back. There alright, though I prefer my doom to be more Pentagram/Old Sabbath styled.
